Question ECU Failure

Hi All,

the other day i went out to find the car wouldnt start, at first the start button did nothing then after about 10 minutes it worked but wouldnt start the engine. The starter motor was going but the engine wouldnt fire. Ive had it towed to the dealers and they have diagnosed the problem as the ECU. Has any one else had this problem?? The bill is a whopping 1000 so any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Which civic is it mate? Shouldn't it be covered under warranty? If it is the ecu for the type r then get a second hand or new hondata one that is cheaper than a 1000.

Phone around the scrap yards or do an online search.

It will need to go to a Honda dealer as you'll need to get your keys programmed to the new ECU.

Mine also went in the cold weather, 2.2 Diesel sport. It's in the dealer now so am waiting on the call to let me know how much it's going to cost! Also out of warranty. Great start to the new year, may have to delay skiing til next year!

The AA came out checked the battery, which was OK but there were two fault codes one was the relay switch and the other was a refer to manufacturer! Got the car started by connecting battery to starter motor and all electrics worked but once turned off the iginition it wouldn't re-start. Any top tips?

ECU problems

Hi all,

I too have had the same problem. Went to started my honda civic ctdi 2.2 and it wouldnt start. I had to be towed to Honda garage, the ERU has gone and its going to cost 1200 to fix. The car is 2 1/2 weeks out fo warranty so Honda are refusing to pay for it. Surely this couldnt be done to wear and tear?

Does anyone who has had similiar problems have any advice

Thanks

I would expect some kind of good will on Honda's part if only 2 1/2 weeks out of warranty, maybe not them footing the whole bill but some gesture (not the two fingered variety) all the same.

Hi All,
i got my car back last weekend from Honda. In the end they did a deal with Honda Uk, if i had a major service and 2 new front tires fitted (they were illegal) the total damage was 998.54 so all in all not to bad as a major service costs 390 and the 2 tires were 130. I got mine done at Honda in Harrogate, so 1200 seems a bit steap!

Sorry to hear your problems.... looks like this problem is only affecting the 2.2's so far?

Thanks all for your comments. I got my car back from Honda today. In the end Honda UK agreed to footing some of the bill as a good will gesture. The total damage in the end was 550. Still frustrating as the car was just out of warranty, but better than 1200 all the same.

The ecu failing is down to a spike from wipers Honda know of the problem
and have a modified wiring loom with a diode for the wiper wires hit the dealer with this then see what they say......

Exclamation ECU failure on 2.2 SE

The ECU failed in my 5dr 2.2 SE (Apr 2006, 63k miles) on 21Dec2009 - a cold morning, with the snow. The car would not start - nothing happened when I pushed the START button then the pre-heat light flashed and the display said 'System'. The AA said the fault code was "starter relay". They put power on the starter soleniod to get it going and drove it to the dealer for me (a week later when the snow/ice had mostly cleared).

The dealer diagnosed that a new ECU was needed, which surprised me as the car ran once started. They fitted the ECU (took a week) and the car started but had another fault code. This time they replaced the EMU sub cord (a wiring harness). Honda refused to pay but the dealer paid for the ECU (1100 or so) leaving me with 473 for the sub cord.

I am not at all happy with Honda and have started action against them and the selling dealer with help from Which?

I also think I may have a slipping clutch (in high gear when accelerating at 50/60 mph).

The problem seams to be with the starter inhibitor relay receiving a spike from the wiper motor causing damage to the ecu. The instrument wiring loom requires to be fitted with a diode and a modified starter relay and if unlucky a new ECU .
