Warning (!) for 2 sec on display when starting

Hi,

I hope someone could shed some light on a warning that I have been getting on my display when starting up. I get the message (!) on the multidisplay. Before I can do anything it disappears. After a few days it comes back (always on the first start up of the day) and disappears again. I checked the manual is says something with the brakes. Does anyone know what it could be? Uhm of course something with brakes.. but if you know more...Thanks

(!) is the handbrake, you will get it all the time the handbrake is on, or should at least...

If it is "!" in a triangle then it's the VSA and should always come on and off at start up....

Hi thanks for your reply,

The (!) is indeed the symbol for the handbrake, but I get this warning in my centre multidisplay in yellow and once the message "check system"

Ahhh yes if it's in the big middle bit it does mean that..... TBH I'd get it diag'd for safety's sake.. it may low brake fluid or something similar which could indicate a bgger problem somewhere..... or it could be a knackered sensor......

Tom

Okay thanks for your help. I'll make an appointment with dealer and of course post it later on.

Be prepared unless your car is under warranty this could cost 30 pounds upwards, however I'd rather pay that than risk my brakes or VSA failing when I needed them...

Have you check oy brake fluid levels lately? Check system can also relate to the engine IIRC, I'm sure others on here have had similar things to do with the battery IMS.... five seconds...

Here you go these may prove useful:

i think i figured out why i got "check system" message with/on/in(dam it-i dont know wich one goes here ) my civic...
It shows the message when battery is low and needs recharging or a bit of driving around untill battery gets recharged-might take a while...
I started to get this message when it was cold outside-like -10 or something.... then i checked the battery-it showd that it needs recharging and as i started up the engine-i got that "check system", but then i drowe around a bit so it recharged the battery-and then starter the engine-didnt get that message no more-even if i let the engine totally cool down...when it was cool-about 4-5 hours later-checked battery-showed everything is OK-started the engine...no message...but if i went to start again in the next morning-battery showed needs recharging-and i got the warning message... well... i continue to "track" that issue-but right now...im kinda sure its because of battery.

I had a similar problem on my 2006 2.2 ES a couple of years ago and after repeated visits to the Dealer and them having the car in for tests nothing was found to be wrong. Apparently no faults show up on the diagnostics and the most likely cause was suggested to be battery related (low voltage). The dealer did in fact replace the battery under warranty but that didn't stop it from happening again. Similarly software updates were applied with no effect. They scratched their heads and spoke to Honda and eventually reassured me that it was nothing to worry about.

I sold the car several months later so don't know if it is still doing it. But do check with your Dealer as I must admit it continued to worry me even with the reassurances from Honda.

That used to happen to me, every now and again and only on the first start up of the day, when parked on a hill. (Facing up the hill)

After a few trips to Honda, it was the battery.. replacement battery and now all is fine.

Hi,

Went to the dealer today. They did a full check-up of the car but couldn't find anything (battery and brakes okay). The messsage still appears now and then. And again only in the morning. Honda says they don't know what it is and "it could be nothing". I think I'll look up an other dealer for a second opinion. Thank you all for your help.

Mine does this, it has done since I got it. Trouble is, very occasionally mine also struggles to start, it fires up, "rumbles" a bit from the rear then dies after a second or less. It restarts no problems after that so I thought it might be a fuel supply problem. The dealer checked that, and the plugs, and the battery and everything's apparently fine, so I'm hoping it's just a quirk with the car.

Thanks for your message. Still odd to read this and Honda says they don't know what it is or ever heard of it before. I still have the warning. Let's hope no car trouble.
Let us know if they find something. My service is over 5000 km. I will get it rechecked.

It does take time fo the fuel pump to pressurise the system
So what I recommend is.
Switch the ignition on
wait 30 seconds.
Fire up the engine.

This might just be the ECU going through its checks and not having time to complete them before you start the car.
