Air con hissing?

Hi all,

This morning I had my aircon serviced. Ever since I my Civic, the air con hasn't worked (the compressor never got engaged).

The aircon specialist did a vacuum test, and it showed no signs of leaks, so they filled up the aircon gas. However, a few hours later, whenever it is on, there seems to be a constant hiss coming from the vents, and to me, I wouldn't describe the A/C as being ice cold.

I'm not sure if it's just because the Honda Civic A/C isn't ice-cold, or if there is something wrong with my aircon. If so - if the vacuum test suggested there was no leaks, any idea's what it could be? They injected a UV dye so will eventually go back.

The compressor is definitely clicking when I turn on the A/C. I even at one point tried to change the relay as I heard it was common (although being the cheap-skate I am, just replaced it with another Omron one).

Not too good with cars in general, so just thought I'd ask if it could be something common?

Thanks all!
John.

Have you checked for snakes in the ducts?

Hi all,
Just had to drive now and aircon compressor is now not clicking, so it looks like there is a leak somewhere and must be empty again 😞

Any ideas what it could be as it didn't show up during the vacuum test?

Thanks
John

If, as you say, they put UV dye in it, then a check over at your "aircon specialist" will be able to see where the leak is, if there is one. If he is a good "aircon specialist" he will also be able to tell you what is wrong with your system.

If you're lucky, they will have regassed with UV Dyed refrigerant - If so, you can grab a UV torch and route around for the leak, or take it back and have them do it.
From what I've read, the basic vaccum tests are fairly easy to pass, so they have a tendancy to not catch "slow punctures".

Now, This is complete conjecture, but as it's a hissing sound whilst engaged, It sounds like there may be a leak on the high pressure side of the system, So I'd take a look at the high pressure lines and the condenser - IIRC, It's fairly common for the condenser to be attacked by flying stones, so it's possible that it has been holed - Worth checking it over with a UV dye first though in case it's something else.
