776 quote for A/C clutch?!

Hi all,

Firstly, moderators forgive me if I've not posted correctly, happy to adjust.

Just come back from my 2nd diagnostic on my Air con on my 8th gen Fn2 1.8 SE ishift Civic. I thought this was a test to blacklight check any leaks from dye left from previous regas. My aircon died 2 days after that regas, 5 months ago. The exact wording from the Honda dealer is: "ac clutch looks to be overheated, advise replacing clutch, electro magnet and thermal cut. Had old style relay, advise replacing also, quote 776.“

Woah.

So, the relay I've seen on part websites, 20, clutch 40, I cannot find anything about a electro magnet or thermal cut...?

Am I being conned? Why was there no mention of a leak. I understand the ac was trying to run on empty and overheated. I still don't know the source of the leak. Meh.

Please could someone advise. No idea. Probably worth taking to a small independent mechanic for a 2nd opinion? I understand the compressor would be an expensive replacement but not the parts mentioned...

Thanks in advance... 😁

Definitely get a second opinion as from what you have said, their quote is too much.

I could understand if the price involved a new compressor.

Vauxhall dealers were quoting around 400 for A/C Clutch on Vectra C's so yes sounds possible from Honda for similar.

Awesome, just found the part online. From what I've read it seems easier and recommended to just replace the compressor. Especially if I find there's damage to the current one if I just got the clutch changed. Unless anyone else has further suggestions I'll check with some local mechanics if they'll do it and I'll source the compressor.

Thanks.

So, you've swapped the Relay?

It's 5 on ebay... worth a try first, to be SURE it's the compressor.

Take your car to an AC specialist NOT HONDA.

An aircon specialist will charge a lot less. One near me charges 70 to fix a slow leak including a full system regas. He charges 250 to fix any serious leak / issue. 776 is just rape!

Are you 100% certain that you need a new compressor and it's not just the clutch that's slipping and needs shimming.
