Cigarette lighter wiring

Hi everyone,

new to the forum here, picked up an 08 Type S GT 2.2 diesel about a month ago. Car has been great with just a few small issues, one of which is the cigarette lighter - anything that I plug in is very loose and falls out/moves around so the power is not consistent.

I've ordered item 400954146162 from eBay to try and replace the socket (sorry can't post links due to my post count).

It hasn't arrived yet but I'm just wondering how it will need to be wired once it does arrive - I took the center console off to look at the existing lighter and should be fine to connect the actual lighter power, but unsure where the 2 wires for the illumination of the new one will need to go.

Can anyone help?

thanks in advance

The standard lighter isn't illuminated as you have found out. The new lighter will likely plug straight in using the existing electrical connection (mine did) but the illumination won't work.

I took a separate ignition controlled live wire from the power supply to the lighter and took it to the illumination contact. Just splice into the cable which goes to the centre pin in the lighter socket and take it the the illumination contact. This means the lighter is illuminated with the ignition rather than by turning on the lights, but this doesn't bother me.
