Steelmate Parking Sensors

So I have a steelmate set fitted. This was done professionally for the first and previous owner with colour coded sensors. When I bought the car he said it seemed to have got quieter but I don't think it is working at all

I then found a wire (grey and black) coming from the roof lining that has either been cut, possibly pinched when the boot was shut or had gone brittle.

Am I right in thinking that the steel mate set up puts the bleeper unit in the roof lining? Is it possible to trace the wires from the sensors and wire up a new beeper in the boot with a feed to the reverse lights. I'd like to be able to get it working but don't really want to strip the roof lining.

If that cable is not related to the sensors any idea what it may be?
