Try e/bay.good for sat nav units. And sat nav dvds for updating your maps.

It looks like you can go with one of the new Tom Tom Start/Start2 equipped units - they're around the price you're looking to pay, and it's £35 on the TomTom site for the downloadable US maps

TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems

Looks like there's an offer on the Start 2 Europe edition, with traffic aerial for £150.

Start² Europe White - Car navigation - TomTom

We've had a few of the older TomTom units, and I'd say they are excellent, easy to use, performance (lock on etc.) is good, and with inbuilt speed camera database and speed limits it was a great driving aid. I had one of the first One's given to me with a dud battery too, back when this sort of thing cost over £200, well surprised that when I removed the covers the whole thing was built around a sturdy die cast metal chassis.
