I've Broken my Civic. It Won't Start (solved)

10G Premier manual
I was fiddling around with the neg battery connector yesterday to fit the tagged Ctek MSX7.0 charger lead. Now the car won't start.

Here's:

What I was doing
Connecting the spade ended connector to the battery for my CTEK charger

What I did
Disconnected the battery neg.
Undid the bolt holding the big earth cable from battery to chassis
Connected charger cable neg lead
Reconnected battery neg.
Car won't start


Diagnostic info

Car Locked
Immobiliser light flashing every 1/sec

Unlock car
Interior lights come on

Open Door
Single Chime (Not noticed this before)
Start Button flashing white
Display info panel shows Clutch and Brake pedals with up arrows under and the Start Button in white
with a wide red underline, which implies to me, press the clutch and brake pedals and hit the start button?

Press Clutch and Brake then press Start
Engine turns over briskly for a few seconds but fails to start.

Then, alternately on info area;
VSA indicator with something that looks like a hourglass (not in book) to the right of it > Start button with a circle with a line from top to centre to the right of the button symbol.
The Immobiliser light is flashing

Turn off
Clutch, Brake and Start button on info panel in white.
Start button not flashing

Get out and lock car
Immobiliser light flashes every 1/sec
Clutch, Brake and start button in white stay displayed for 10 - 20seconds

As a matter of interest, the My Honda app says that the tyre pressures are suspect.

Have contacted Honda dealer and he is going to phone me back sometime today? But just wondered if there a quick reset procedure for the electronic gubbins which is pretty obviously borked?

SOLUTION: See post #7.
It may not be important to unlock the car using the key fob button, but unlock it that way anyway.

A similar thing happened to my 10G after I disconnected my battery negative terminal to try and reset things in an attempt to get the MyHonda dongle working correctly.

Like you the first time I pressed the start button after reconneting the battery, the engine turned over a few times and didnít start. I then got out and locked and unlocked the car with the fob buttons (rather than the keyless system) and then got back in and pressed start again while pressing the clutch and brake together as indicated, it then started. I then took it for a short drive and the remaining orange VSA light went out once the system recalibrated. I think the engine not starting was to do with the immobiliser stopping it, locking and unlocking with the fob buttons seemed to reset the immobiesr and allowed it to start.

The manual mentions the immobiliser needing to be reset and the VSA needing to recalibrate after disconnecting the battery. You will also have to long hold the audio power button to reactivate the audio system.

Keyless ignition on that one Farqui.


I get the clutch brake keyless start button image. That one is normal. You don't have to press the brake pedal when starting btw just the clutch. The hourglass is new but it lines up with what is said in the manual regarding restarting when it doesn't start first time, my guess it's telling you to wait as you're supposed to wait 30s before attempting another startup.

After a battery disconnection, it displays a graphic in white asking you to press the clutch, brake and start button together. I'm not sure why, but after the first start it returns to normal. The usual graphic is red and just says press clutch and start button.

Because you have disconnected the battery, before you turn the ignition on (press start button) you need to press both the brake pedal (quite hard) and clutch pedal (as normal) to be able to start the engine. This is on RHD models only.
This is to re-initialise the immobiliser.


You will also get a VSA warning with hourglass, this is because steering angle sensor need to re-calibrate and this is done by slowly driving up to about 12mph. (don't accelerate quickly)


Both items are described in the owners manual and if you have warning messages turn on in the meter, (default is OFF unless dealer has turned on as instructed during PDI) the meter description will guide you.

That's because the VSA system is not working until the steering angle sensor is re-calibrated. Tyre pressure system is part of VSA.

Got it started. Yey. Thanks to Cliff and Steve for the main pointers, and the others who contributed.
I'm not sure whether it was unlocking the cart with the Key fob (I used the handle grab method yesterday), thanks Cliff, or the fact that I might not have been pressing the brake hard enough, thanks Steve, but it started just fine and dandy. Got lots of warning about VSA, ABS, Tyres ACC, Lane departure etc. but hope that these will reset after a short drive.
I'll keep you posted after taking it for a walk.

Not sure what 'The meter' is Steve. Please enlighten me. Perhaps another good stiff RTFM might help here.

The various orange warnings cleared for me not long after I passed the end of my road.. so you shouldn't have to drive far.

Just like key in the ignition, I've had keyless entry vehicles that ideally needs the fob well out of range when fiddling with the main battery.

Glad it's sorted.


Interesting that the RHD models behave differently from the LHD ones when it comes to depressing the brake pedal when starting.


I'll definitely remember to keep the keyless fob well away from the car if I'm ever fiddling with the battery. Thanks for that info Farqui.

That's only for the first start following a battery disconnection. Normal start of RHD models is just depress clutch and press the start button - no brake pedal required.
