Question i-VTEC - R18A1 or R18A2??

Does anybody know what is the difference between the two i-VTEC engines?

is the A2 the upgrade of the A1?
is A1 in my06 cars and A2 in my07?
or is the A1 the US spec. the A2 EU spec.?

any ideas

Do they relate to i-vtec engines at all??

I think I got it!

It looks like the A1 is the US spec. and A2 is EU spec.

Or does anybody has an R18A1 engine in a 3/5/(4) door model in europe?

(or am I just too curious concerning this engine codes )

yes I know.. I found first on the net that there is A1 and A2 engine and later I found that turbo kit stuff... but they don't belong directly together..

anyway there couldn't be too much differences between the A1, A2.. as said I am just curious.. that's it

This is hot topic for me too, because I want to buy turbo kit for my r18a2 engine, but the main question remains:

Why nobody respond to this topic with some real information about a1 and a2 diferencies? What is the real deal about a1 and a2 engines? Do they in Japan really don't like us in europe, or what? Do we UK civic owners are forgotten, or something?

...If anybody have real information about this tematic, please post...

The difference in performance between the engines seems to be nothing. Both are SOHC and I would guess that there is not much difference in the design either, maybe layout details.

R1 is US version
R2 is EU version

I think hardware is the same but the software is different. This difference is mainly OBD issues. Power should be the same. (Probably some slight modifications for the US petrol)

This is what I guess but it isn't a fact.

Here some info

R18A1
• Found in:
o 2007- Honda Civic (JDM FD1, USDM FA1, USDM FG1)
• Displacement: 1799 cc
• Compression: 10.5:1
• Bore & stroke: 81.0 x 87.3 mm
• Power: 138 bhp (140 PS, 103 kW) @ 6300 rpm
• Torque: 17.7 kgm (174 N•m) @ 4300 rpm
JDM cars or short "JDMs" were generally limited to 280 PS and a top speed of 180 km/h (~112 mph, via a speed limiter device), mostly due to safety concerns. The 280 PS limit was lifted in 2004. [1] However, the speed limit of 180 km/h is still in effect to this day
United States domestic market (USDM)

R18A2
• Found in:
o 2007- Honda Civic (EDM FN1, EDM FK2)
• Displacement: 1799 cc
• Compression: 10.5:1
• Bore & stroke: 81.0 x 87.3 mm
• Power: 138 bhp (140 PS, 103 kW) @ 6300 rpm
• Torque: 17.7 kgm (174 N•m) @ 4300 rpm

2-door coupe (FG1/FG2)
3-door hatchback (FN1/FN2/FN3)
4-door sedan (FA1/FA3/FA4/FA5/FD1/FD2/FD3/FD4)
5-door hatchback (FK1/FK2/FK3)

It seems that R18A1 engines are for US & Japan markets ans R18A2 for Europe.
There must be not nay major diferrences between two versions.

Perhaps your A1 version is for US market and not JDM

A1 is installed in Japan models and A2 in Euro models but engines are same only gearboxes are different.... A1 euro models (4 doors) have speed limit at 209/210km/h while 5 door models don't have. I had test drive in my dealership on track and 4 door didn't went over 210km/h and it wasn't near 7000 rpm in 6th while hb (5 door) went over 210 till 215km/h
