Noisy Diesel?

Hi all

Just purchased a 1.6 Diesel which seems a great car however at idle the diesel sounds really noisy.

Before this I had a Nissan Quashqai and apart from initial start up you could barely hear the engine. I also test drove a Mazda 3 1.5 Diesel before buying the Civic and that was almost silent.

Anyone else find the Civic is really noisy at idle and low speed? Or is it just me needing to turn the radio up to drown the noise out

Yes I do.
I am on my second 9G 1.6 iDtec and this one is even louder than my last. Still goes just as well though. I asked an engineer at the Honda dealer I got it from and he stated that some are noisier than others. But what is the reason?

Glad itís not just me. Last time I drove a car with such a noisy Diesel engine was an old Austin Maestro! Itís a pity as apart from the noise itís a nice car.

Mine's fairly loud too. Nothing to worry about I don't think; sounds the same as other 1.6 DTEC's I've heard. I understand what you mean though, for a modern diesel it is loud.

I recall a conversation with a service chap at the dealer, who said he wouldn't have the 1.6dtec because they are 'rattly noisy'. Its a characteristic of the engine apparently.

So I think that they are a bit more noisy than other diesels because they are using less Pilot injection to improve fuel economy. My friends 1.6d Focus is a lot quieter than mine, yet gets 20MPG less. Not getting a car because the engines a bit noisy is a bit of a rubbish reason not to get one tbh

Iíve got one, just wondered if anyone elseís was noisy too. For such a nice car it just doesnít sound very refined!

Fuel economy seems amazing at the minute.

Try a tank full of BP Ultimate. Its supposed to have a higher cetane rating so cleaner burn, which might help reduce the rattle noise and help with longevity of your DPF. I use nothing else but can't compare as I've never sat next to another dtec at idle.

try leaving the mrs at home it will be a lot quieter then

but on a serious note the 1.6 dtec is a good engine and fantastic mpg return in comparison to some other makes, after admit I thought the same on my 2.2 when I first got it ...

I run mine on Supermarket special and have had no issues with DPF and it's a Diesel, it will rattle a bit but it's not that bad.. Everyone to their own but the only think I found with fancy fuel is that it empties your wallet quicker.

P.S. I'm on almost 75k miles.
