Skunk2 MegaPower R Exhaust

I've been looking at these over the last day or so. Apparently the 07-11 Sedan model fits the FD2.

I had considered the RR 76mm version but it seems damn loud on the YouTube vids out there. The 70mm R sounds more palatable.

So two questions really.

Can anyone confirm they do fit the FD2 and if so any modifications needed, e.g. to the hangars.

Second has anyone found any dB measurements for them as the Yanks don't seem to care about that stuff unless they're in a state that doesn't allow louder exhausts, in which case the dB readings are irrelevant anyway. It comes with a bung, so ideally figures with and without.

I do plan to do some track days and don't want a system that will stop me getting on most places.

I'm sorry I can't help you with regards to fd2 fitment but I have one of these exhausts on my s2k and it is damn loud!! Sounds mental but if drone isn't your thing is avoid it. It doesn't bother me but my passengers tell me their ears ring after they get out of my car like they have been in a really loud night club.

The exhaust itself is superb quality and tig welded. I'd say of ot fits go for it. I could try get db reading of mine if it helps? Got to be similar.

I would be wary John. Firstly, there might be some fettling required to get it to fit - eg hangars etc. Secondly, you could end up with something that's still way too loud for use as a daily driver. Thirdly, bear in mind that should you add other mods at a later date, a 76mm will get you power gains over a 70mm system (see PDF for a comparison on my FD2).

If you could try to get a dB reading that would be grand. It'll be a bit different being an F20 and twin exit but like you say it should be in the same ball park.

It's shame you've mentioned about the drone. I went through that with the Spoon cat back/N1 I had on my EP3. I had the bung for it, but hardly ever used it. It got a bit tiresome after a while!

The hangars bit doesn't really bother me unless it turns into a rattling issue, as above my Spoon system used to knock something chronic in the rain as water kettled between the b-pipe and the underbody!

Drone does bother me to be honest, but I've little chance of knowing what it's like before I fit it unless someone else has taken the plunge on one first.

I know what you are saying about the 76mm system. That's why I first started looking at them but the Skunk2 76mm is way too loud. There's not a chance of that being track friendly even with the bung in.

Where I'm at now with it is I'm not even sure I'm going to go for an aftermarket header. The FA and FG guys in the States are fitting FD2 headers with cats to keep themselves legal in places like California. They aren't seeing massively different figures than those swapping out for full headers. The FD2 header is supposed to be good as it is. It's already a 4-2-1 and I've got the Jonster decat pipe too. It leaves it open for easily swapping the cat back on too.

I don't know if I've got the heart for for cam swaps again, multiple remaps and chasing numbers.

The major thing that bothers me is being 98dB and under. I have my doubts about the Skunk2 for that to be honest.

Is yours a TDi system Andy? The cost is probably comparable to the Skunk2 isn't it?

The FD2 header is good John - better than the OEM FN2 for sure.

My exhaust was made by JR Fabrications in Derbyshire. It was probably more expensive than the Skunk. However, it's pretty quite with minimal drone. I'm staying in the Manchester area at the moment if you wanted to hear how quiet a 3" system can be

I had the 70mm R on my EP3 and it was way, way louder than the Spoon. Much more bassy and droney especially at motorway cruising speeds. I had to use the bung for trackdays and it sucked the life out of the cars performance.

Build quality was gash as well. Baffles came loose causing a buzzing sound at 2500rpm and the badge fell off. Replacement exhaust did exactly the same.

Andy's custom exhaust is a very restrained system in terms of noise. Clever use of a meercat helmholtz resonator makes it very subtle indeed with no compromise to flow. Little noise inside the car but still sounds superb outside without making a trackday noise limit threatening racket.

I never got back to this thread so sorry for the lack of updates.

Thanks to Andy for the meet up. Seriously sorted car that.

I've ended up winning a Kakimoto Regu06&R cat back on eBay with a silly low best offer. Just needs O gaskets and bolts which should be pennies I'm hoping.

I've not got it yet, but I'm pretty sure any O gasket of the right size and common bolts will do.

Worth bearing in mind though.

Great exhaust John Jonster on the FD2 Owners forum runs one of these and is very happy with it. Jonster is a perfectionist when it comes to his car so that tells you how good the Kakimoto will be

It arrived today. Came with bolts and a half perished gasket. At least I know what to buy.

Purdy as far as exhausts go.

At the start of next month hopefully. Getting all the bits together and doing it in one go.

Pretty good so far. I'll start enjoying it more when I get chance to get it more like how I want it.
