New Car Also

Hi guys,

Just like to say this is a fantastic forum, I've been here about a week just reading many of the threads and learn't so much in a short space of time. I joined to find out more about the civic mainly to find out how well they run before I committed to buying one and was very please to find they don't have many problems and good for well over 130k. I decided on a 2.2i cdti as I plan on camping all around the country, 5 doors (FK3) as I have a child and I like the practicality.

I've been looking for a car now for 3 weeks locally, I seen about 20 and was disappointed by either there condition ( I like my cars mint ) or lack of spec, many where too high miles or too old, I knew I could expect better. Then there was one I really liked the look of in autotrader but it was 40 miles away and there was no indication of its condition and it was an 06 plate but only had 58k on the clock (I doubted the mileage is genuine anyway). I took a gamble and hired a car to go see it, telling myself its too good to be true this car while driving up there.

On arrival the salesman found me straight away and asked if I was looking for anything in particular, I told him I came to see the civic and he pointed me to the back of the garage where there was atleast 30 cars blocking it in. I find the car and see the most amazing gleeming 06 civic in absolute showroom condition, no dents no scratches all body panels lined up perfectly with even gaps and no different shades of paint even the plastic trim was non faded and perfect on every corner on top of that the alloys where nearly unmarked and 18inch with new tyres. My GF and I looked at each other with our jaws hanging and eyes popping out. I couldn't believe nobody snapped this car up already. We sit inside and its in immaculate condition better than any civic I seen no wear on the wheel, shifter or handbrake the cars mileage is actually lining up with the condition. I started it up there was no hesitation or smoke and purred nicely. Whoever owned this car before loved it to my surprise I found it had four previous owners and a slight discrepancy in its service history.

I asked for a test drive and salesman says your not having a test drive if your not buying it jokingly with remark to the 30 cars he would have to shift to get the car out. He agreed and said come back in an hour and it will be ready for you.

After some lunch we returned to the car parked on the forecourt we all jump in and set off, there was a slight scrape pulling of onto the main road at a funny angle which bothered me a little and I felt like I had to give it more respect taking. I took it easy around the town and slow over the speed bumps and I didnt hear any more scraping. Comparing this car to all the others I drove it was stiffer and firmer, however the salesman confirmed it was the standard suspension to the best of his knowledge.
We get to a national speed limited road and I instantly gave it the beans, now again this car felt a little different it was louder (noisier) the turbo noise was way more whistley and the accelaration felt a little hesitant and didn't seem to respond as well as the others I drove, the other seamed to reach 70 more easily.

Can any of you guys give me a heads up on what I'm feeling here, do you think it could be just a service and tuning this car needs or is it the 18 inch wheels that have changed the ride and behavior so much?
I have put a deposit on this car and collect it tomorrow as I loved it too much to let it go.

When I got home I did a vehicle check to find everything came back good but found it has had 3 number plate changes by the second owner 3 days after he bought it, then 40 days later it went back to original then he kept it for 2 years then changed the plate to a different private and then sold it 20 days later. he took ownership at 16000miles and sold at 30000miles. The last two owners kept the car for approx 2 years each and now its at 58000miles.

Do you guys think I should be cautious and doubtful about this car? Its never been stolen no high risk details no outstanding finance no writeoffs and no colour changes.

Sorry about the OTT story guys.
Heres a pic of the beautiful car...

Epic post there fella, bravo.

The cars are generally solid and respond well to a good service.

If the car has done mainly short town trips then the inlet and EGR could be coked, which would contribute to the hesitant acceleration. It may also have non OEM file/air filters. It may just something as simple as a thorough service.

Under hard acceleration did the revs rise without a match in velocity? If so, then the clutch will be slipping. Its the one really weak link in early 8th gen diesel's, it's not as costly to fix these days and several options are available but a replacement will hit you for around 800.

There are also a number of sensor and valves that could be at fault but you don't mention a dash warning light, so they are less likely.

If the condition is so good then it may have been owned by and older driver and only done short, town trips? Good fuel and a long blow put may help her breath again.

Nothing too expensive or difficult to fix, just be prepared and out some pennies aside to cover.

Its low mileage for an 06, in good condition, with near complete service history. So its probably worth a punt.

Its difficult to diagnose from the sofa, so for peace of mind could you get an inspection done before laying down your 's?

Good luck.

Hi Farqui,

Thanks for the reply, like you said its worth a punt and so I took it. End of the day its from a dealer and I should be covered for most things.

I tested the clutch and had no noticeable slipping problem with it.
The car feels 100% solid and no rattles, the scrapping noise I notice was probably down to the mud flaps on the front so I dismissed that as I couldn't find anything protruding underneath.

After taking ownership I found a load of service and MOT documents with the owners manual which more than satisfies my doubt, the salesman never even showed me all that, I don't even think he knew about the extra things included by the previous owners in there.

After a few hours driving I feel very reassured about the purchase.

It was quite funny, on the motorway home a red CTR came screaming down and then slowed down to the side of me, I think he was checking out the kit and wheels before I turned off, that made buzz.

My next plan of action is get it on the rollers to see if the power is down, if so get what I can cleaned up like you mention inlet and EGR could be coked then I'm considering some remapping.

Can you suggest or recommend any specialist tuners that will do this kind of work in my local area? I don't mind driving 50miles around Manchester.

Thanks for your help bud.

Bart

Excellent, you now own a starship

Good to hear about the receipts, nice to have and should ease your mind a little

Check out Grinspeed or TDiNorth, both know their Honda's.

You're welcome, enjoy and keep us up to date.
