Our new civic 1.8 vtec EX progress thread

thanks for the warm welcome. My first civic and in fact my first honda new to the forum but not new to car modding. I never go over the top with cars but i like them to be looked after and spoilt. The civic was for the wife as an early christmas present but rather than watching it become neglected i have took a shine to it and spent a bit of time and money on it to get it looking its best. Spent a few weeks looking and decided we wanted a black one and the wife wanted the toys of an EX. One popped up on autotrader so we went straight out to view it. Was a part exchange at a prestige car dealership that specialized in range rovers, porches and Jaguars so it was the cheapest thing there lol

It hadnt been prepped so was looking a bit worse for wear but took it for a drive and loved it. engine was silky smooth and the drive was great. We made an offer as a trade sale and got it for a very good price with the intention of restoring it to its former glory

its a black 1.8 vtec EX

Picked up on the test drive that a bearing had worn but was later diagnosed as stepped tyres. bought 4 new dunlop sport max tyres and the noise had gone. great tyre which i have on my other car and very pleased with them

also got a mate to give it a full stage 1 machine polish to remove the swirl marks and bring back the paints gloss

next was to sort the bulbs. one of the numberplate ones had blown so upgraded to ice white smd bulbs.

did the same to the sidelights to match the factory hid lights very good colour match too

before

...and after

next was to sort the faded numberplates so had some made up and put them on. the front one is now flush with the bumper and i have removed the black plastic plate holder. it did look better without a front plate though lol

next was to address the exhaust trims which had loads of carbon build up. they dont look like they have ever been cleaned! bit of elbow grease along with some metal polish and wire wool and they look like new again

before

...and after

did a few other things such as new interior mats and a full service so its looking pretty good now

Loving the civic so far even though its the wifes and we have only had it since tuesday and had some great advice from you guys already so a big thank you for that. next on the list is to get the alloys refurbed and i need a new handbrake lever and gear knob but other than that im open to ideas. i have been reading about the plastidip on the bumper trims so that could be the first thing to do

Snap

First thing I did to my NHB 1.8 EX was 4 new Dunlop SportMaxx RT tyres and LED side lights!

Just out of interest, what tyre's were fitted originally?

I'm tempted to try the SportMAXX next but others had commented that they do not last very long or that they aren't a quiet as their rating suggests.

Not too sure what brand they were but they were directional tread and we're cracked so no good. I can't fault the Dunlop's. My other car is a Ford s max and I have them on that too. Lots of motorway miles and it's silent.

i used 0000 wire wool with a bit of metal polish. only had Brasso at work so used that lol. previously i had tried tar remover, fallout remover and wheel cleaner and none of it made a difference. i added a dab of metal polish and worked it in with the wire wool then buffed it with a clean microfibre with a little extra polish. it did a great job and came off really easily

only done the outer edge of them for now but looking at removing them soon and cleaning the inside of them too.

Few shots of the new 5000K bulbs. Great cut off and a lot more light on the road too.

Picked up a mint condition handbrake from @Farqui so finally managed to swap out the old horrible handbrake. Looked like it snapped in the usual place and the previous owner tried to melt it together with a soldering iron. Looks a million times better now and lifts the interior

Old

.. and new

Picked up a new lighter too off eBay as it didn't come with one either so the I terror looks nice and tidy again. Just need a new gear knob now.
