I'm new to this forum but found this site a wealth of knowledge from it's members
Recently bought a 2007 Civic 2.2 EX. Tonight I went to open the drivers door and the handle stayed in and door would not open. nor from inside. Almost like no spring back from the handle (if you get what i mean) Eventually with a bit of vigorous squeezing of the handle it opened and i could open the door. All other doors ok and boot ok.
My question is what could be the problem - Is it the handle mechanism or some sort of actuator? Is this a known problem on these?
I've got warranty with the car dealer i bought it from but I'm hoping its not gonna be a real problem job or expensive
Thanks for the swift reply - Is there a wiki on how to take off the door panels as never done it on this car before and don't wanna start breaking things and not sure what I'm looking for once it is off.
many thanks - i'll take a look and see how brave i feel about taking it apart. I'm more curious what it could be thats wrong as only just started happening and I've only had the car 2 weeks.
took the door card off which was easy - Cables both attached on inside of door card. Trying to understand the mechanism When you squeeze the handle to open the door, what is this pulling on if this makes sense. As stated before when it goes wrong, you squeeze the handle and the handle doesn't spring back as it should. if you thump the handle area gently (LOL) it releases and you can open the door. Do you guys think its the handle mechanism or some sort of actuator thats the problem.
Surely if it's the outside handle as a problem you should be able to open it fine from the inside ok? This is what makes me think its something else thats stopping it.
Sorry for all the quesions, Any ideas would be most appreciated.
My passenger door was sticky and you had to really squeeze the handle to open it. It was the actuator which seemed to not unlock fully, or something like that......
When the car is locked, does the handle spring back normally? These were the symptoms I had and would definitely point to the actuator
No handle doesn't spring back when it goes wrong and door handle stays pulled in so I agree with you being the actuator. Already been on lings site so just need to get garage to agree so it can be changed under extended warranty
The easy way to test if it's the actuator is to see if the handle behaves differently when locked, if it behaves the same the likelihood is it's the handle itself.
It was relatively easy to change myself, albeit there wasn't much access to get to it,
well handle stays in when it goes wrong and you can't open it from inside either. if i thump near the outside handle then it releases and i can open the door? So I'm not sure what it is? If it was the outside handle as a problem, why can't i open it from the inside then it goes wrong
i had a bit of trouble with mine some time ago which turned out to be the locking mechanism on the actuator sticking
if memory serves there is a rod that goes from the door handle to the actuator
on the actuator there is a tab that the rod pushes when you pull the door handle to open the door, if the door is locked the tab is pulled down by the locking mechanism out of reach of the rod.
if that tab sticks down even though you've unlocked the car ( like mine did ) there is nothing for the rod to push in order to move the mechanism to open the door.
what cured mine was to lubricate the tab area with silicone lubricant until it moved freely when locking / unlocking the car
it might be worth lubricating the door handle mechanism while your at it i can't remember mine sticking in when mine was playing up but if yours is it's worth a try
on the other hand if the car is warrantied just take it back and let them deal with it, don't worry about the cost that's down to them
a door that can't be opened is an MOT fail and if the warranty is any good it should be sorted
Turned out to be the masterlock on the drivers door, it caused my passenger front door to seize locked. Eventually started to happen on odd occassion to my boot.
Ever hear any distinct CLUNKs from the door (usually when they free up) , sure fire sign its the lock playing up.
