Tailgate Adjustment! Boot Fitment!

Hi All...

Strange one...My car has just come back from the bodyshop after a rear arch respray (poor quality local repair by the previous owner).

I've checked the car over and noticed the boot window seal is snagging against the roof line of the car. The distance between the glass and roof when opening and closing the boot seems to be a few mm less on the drivers side (see pics below)

Snagged tailgate seal:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/uNuAzk5gCgPg7AEU9

Gap when half opened (drivers side):

https://photos.app.goo.gl/JEia2BVNGSYrzBAM9

Passenger side (when closed):

https://photos.app.goo.gl/bsoq3RnsrzP9zikQ9

Gap when half opened (passenger side):

https://photos.app.goo.gl/6tqLJTK6MdjEbVKf9

Its obviously been like this for a while as the boot wasn't removed by the bodyshop and the window is original.

Speaking to my local Honda approved window fitters the seal is just cosmetic and Honda have removed loads of seals in the past to no ill effect (just cosmetic). My main concern is the closeness of the window to the body of the car...

Anyone adjusted their tailgate successfully? Has anyone removed the seal?

Cheers.

I have the same buddy I replaced the whole rear tailgate reason being was

Rear perspex window leaked in
And was shoddy

Found a second hand one on eBay £50 collected went to view it the top rubber part had a split in it

And the perspex window the strip lip is slightly away from the window I asked 'did it leak or not' no no leak ok said to him' I'll be back ' without the punn never leaked since and it's now 4-5months and when I installed it it looks like new rubber fresh window hahahaha quids in.

Myne isn't as close as your to the body wish it was I reset my lock clearance so I didn't need to slam the boot anymore myne has gap problems like yours too left, right it seals all that matters to me tbh. But everyone is different.

I think given time all seals will begin to perish, nature of soft rubber unfortunately.

Can you remember if there's any up (forwards), down (backwards) adjustment in the top hinges? My drivers side needs moving back by a couple of mm to ensure it doesn't catch the roof.

Cool, yes, I'll be getting help from my friend who's a mechanic.

How much adjustability is there? do yo think I'll be able to do what I need from adjusting the right hinge?

You undo the 4 10mm bolts on each hinge take the struts off otherwise it won't let you adjust the boot ok that's how I did it other pics just incase you need to remove the tailgate

Ahhh so to adjust you have to drop the headlining?

You can't adjust it from the top while the boot lid is in place?

Mine must have always been like this in that case...Theres definitely no way the bodyshop have touched the headlining as I'd see creases. Strange how the seal has started snagging.

Do you think it's possible that the boot may have readjusted itself by working the bolts loose?

Thanks for confirming...Im guessing the finish (or lack of) under the glass was caused by the removal of the seal?

If that's the case I'd prefer to cut mine rather than remove it as it looks a little rough.

No thatís weathering over the years its all around the glass Iíve been trying different things to cure it as its missing black paint on inside of glass but when I paint it (very awkward) wirh a small brush the ghosting still shows so glass must be weathered aswell so only answer for me new glass or scrapyard tailgate

Cool, so that weathering was already there before the seal was pulled off?

Ok cool, gives me hope if I need to remove the seal. Once removed did it change the look of the glass? I'd rather have a cracked seal than a window that's lost all the back underneath.

It was half hanging off anyway so not sure but looks a bit different as you can see the frame of the car well the paint colour instead of black rubber so cosmetically theres a difference but small

Tailgate Adjustment! Boot Fitment!

Went to see my mechanic friend who took a look yesterday. The plan is to leave it as is and monitor to see if moves any more. He seems to think the hinge may have bent slightly over the years causing the drivers corner to work itís way closer to the roof line. Itís a toss up between removing trim and damaging the headlining to correct a problem that may remain as is. The boot is 100% original and hasnít been altered since factory. As you can see in the picture the hinge hasnít been meddled with at all as the paint hasnít been disturbed.

Just a shame the seal is torn.

Other than that the car looks fantastic (straight out of the bodyshop).

Neil11 and dkkirk2016 like this.
