Are the 9th gen selling?

First of all I know there are a fair few members on here with 9th gen Civics but there are a few things that are making me wonder how many Honda are actually shifting.

First of all Honda seemed very quick after launch to start pushing the 3 years zero finance and three years free servicing tactic on them that I thought they were only using to move the last few 8th gens.

Secondly today I get four, yes four letters from Honda today with the usual leaflet giving details on the car, again pushing the finance and servicing offer, but also offering a 25 M&S voucher if I simply book a test drive in one and get the dealer to stamp a form.

Makes me wonder what's next? Price cuts?

Funny you should mention this Loxy I was thinking the same thing when i got the same letter and leaflet through my door today. However, they are not offering me zero finance deal. Is that finance deal specific to certain dealers?

add another to the list that received the letter trying to push the new civic on me, another one who thinks they are not selling and I am not surprised

Did it have this leaflet in it?

More pages than this including mpg info, design etc. but basically:

Front

Offer (I forgot the 1,000 deposit contribution!)

The voucher (M&S or John Lewis)

Yep same leaflet apart from the finance offer. Hmm are they allowed to offer different finance deals across the country?

Book Test Drive | New Honda Civic 2012 | New Cars | Honda (UK)

Click "Finance" then Option 2. National campaign so it seems.

The offer on your leaflet is Option 1

There's a load around Cambridge.

In fact I think there's more 9th gens in my work car park than any other generation of Civic.

Got a phone call inviting me to an open weekend with special deals available. I declined, told them I didn't want an old man car.

I got cold called by a honda rep and told them Honda doesn't manufacture any vehicles that I would consider buying anymore.

She then asked if I want to be removed from the distribution lists and I replied "No it might be useful in about 50 years "

I got a letter from Honda in the 'willy wonka golden ticket' form offering me 500 off if I bought a 9th gen on that certain week or weekend it was like an open time for it.
I threw it away thinking if they added another 0 (or 2 ) then I would have gone to check it out...

I can count on 1 hand how many I have seen, I've seen more 8th now then I ever have done :/

yeah, i got one of these letters (and a text for the young at heart) about the deals, was a little surprised about 0% finance & free servicing given how early it is into the roll out of the car...

it will be a sales gimmick, the more out there = product exposure!

I too seen this, I spoke to the service manager last time I was at honda and he said they werent shifting them because they only had the higher spec models in and were struggling to get hold of e cheaper, more popular models, but the car in the leaflet, if it's the same one i Got is a 1.4 and it's over 17k!!im not surprised they're not selling

I live effectively between 2 large Honda dealerships and I've seen 2 on the road since launch!

BTW had my 3rd sit in one today - one fully specc'ed with leather and sat nav and priced at 25.5K.

Verdict slightly more positive but not my much:

Positives

1. With leather the interior looks much better than before, great improvement visually over the cloth and nice feel

2. Sat Nav and colour display at top by windscreen, again improve the dash

3. Gear lever looks better although see comment about fake alu below

So top option definitely improves it slightly.

Negatives

1. Hit knee on pointy corner of door card (again!) getting in - long term either bad knee or broken door card

2. Still think steering wheel looks boring without the alu highlights

3. Leather on steering wheel is absolutely shockingly terrible. All smooth and stretched and lumpy and fat - looks and feels like a cheap vinyl, no texture

4. Dash material looks same as 8 gen - not seeing the improvements in quality others mention

5. On same subject the black plastic buttons on the steering wheel that replaced the alu effect ones look cheap compared to the 8 gen

6. Alu trims on door handles and around centre small cubby by gear lever look like cheap silver plastic not alu, alu effect not as good as on 8th gen

7. Exterior wise, rear tailgate still a shocker

I wouldn't mind test driving one to get a voucher though

I don't think they are shifting many at all. I have seen two on the road so far. I think they will lower the price when the new reg plates kick in.

I wondered the same re sales. I seem to recall back in early 2006 though that I didn't see many 8G's either. Even in early 2007 when I got my first one they weren't that common.

I've got nothing against the new model per-say and in due course I'll probably get one, but it hasn't prompted me to rush out.

I'm sure I will like the new suspension, quietness and the Mrs will like the easier exterior door handles, if the reports are accurate.

I'm not too happy about the new SatNav position and I'm yet to be convinced about its touchscreen and resultant fingerprints. I do agree that the rear end plastics look like an afterthought and is too bulbous.

I'm also waiting for the Trip Computer selection restriction to be sorted, as previously mentioned.

But:

I've looked at quite a few other models online:

Audi 1 and 3
Golf
Auris/Prius
Focus
Ceed (2012)
i30 (2012)
BMW 1 (2012)
Volvo 30 & 40

... and none of them match for equipment levels v price. In fact some of them you can't spec up to Civic levels.

Unless I've done it wrong for example, you can't get a Focus Titanium X petrol powershift, you have to drop down to a Zetec with reduced equipment.

With the Golf, everything is an option and once it's off the forecourt those options are dead when it's trade in time.

Toyota have abandoned the traditional handbrake for a foot operated one which is a nightmare to operate so the whole Toyota range is off my list.

BMW do seem to be introducing a proper auto version with the 2012 1 series range so I'm keeping an eye out for comparison, especially as the SatNav rises out of the top of the dash, where it should be for safety.

The reports re the Ceed and i30 do tend to follow the 'you only get what you pay for' quote so whilst being quite good overall there's nothing exceptional about them. Apparently they share the same SatNav unit which is reported as having poor quality graphics.

The Sales Manager at my local dealership was remarkably frank and transparent. I live in the northwest and here it appears the 9th gen is not selling as well as hoped for and sales targets are not being met. The situation may be exacerbated by the non availability of popular colour(s). Honda promotions run in quarters and the current promotion expires 30th June. Lets see what HUK have to offer at the end of this month. The current situation does allow, however, for those considering a change a potential great deal, depending of course on the car you wish to part ex. Perhaps NH Dan may be able to comment.
