advice needed...

hi all

right, before i call up my insurance company, i want a bit of advice...

my mates car is taxed, MOT and service ... all good... but hes not planning on insurance it or declaring it SORN, reason being, he going away for 6 months, and he leaving his car in my private car park space, so there no need to declare it SORN.

so my question is... will i be able to drive his car?
i know my insurance allow me to drive other peoples car as long as i get permission..... and i will get permission of him.

what im worried about is, the car itself isn't insurance, but im.... i dont know wherever i can drive it or not.

im gunna call my insurance company up in the morning, but i just wanted to ask for some advice first....

Thanks

No mate you can't drive the car if your mate hasnt got insurance for the car.

You can just add the car to your policy mate if you want to drive it

it won't need to be SORN cause it's taxed!

will the car be left in a locked garage away from public glare? if not....he's taking a risk not having insurance!!

btw, what car is it??

When SORN is needed

SORN applies to all tax classes including those where no duty is payable, such as historic and disabled tax classes.
You must make a SORN if one of the following applies:
  • if you don’t renew your vehicle tax and you are keeping the vehicle off the road
  • if you are applying for a refund of vehicle tax and keeping the vehicle off the road
  • if you buy an untaxed vehicle and do not tax it
  • if the vehicle has no valid insurance in place
  • if you are cancelling the insurance and keeping the vehicle off the road
  • every 12 months if you continue to keep your vehicle off the road
  • in advance if your vehicle is to be kept off the road in the UK when you are abroad
Vehicle insurance law

The new vehicle insurance law means the registered keeper of a vehicle must keep it taxed and insured while using it on the road.
You must declare SORN if your vehicle is:
  • not taxed and off the road
  • not insured and off the road
  • taxed and uninsured - you must insure your vehicle or make a refund application with a SORN declaration to DVLA
If you're not insured and haven't made a SORN, you could face a penalty.
If you have a vehicle that is taxed and not insured which you will be keeping off road you need to return the tax disc. You can do this on a V14 (including nil value discs) and declare SORN at the same time.

When to make a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) : Directgov - Motoring

I think the changes only came in a few months ago.

I think now the Motor Insurance Database is being used if your car is taxed but not insured you are at risk of getting a fine. Obviously if your friend is going away for a while he wont recieve the friendly reminders and could potentially come back to alot of trouble. As stated above, why not see about adding it to your policy if your friend agrees?
