Trying to chose my first Civic...

Hi all,

We're replacing our old Micra with a new family car. After much research and test-driving my wife and I both decided the (9G) Civic was the nicest finished and most enjoyable to drive (why on earth do people say the Golf is fun!?).

...now all we have to decide is trim and engine. I think we've settled on ES-T, and we've driven a 1.6 i-dtec (which was nice), but I'm kinda' hankering after the 2.2 i-dtec's power but I'm worried its gearbox, ride and handling wont be as nice as the 1.6, and my local dealer has no 2.2s to drive! Opinions welcome.

Tony

Hi Tony and welcome to

My advice is find a dealer that can source a 2.2 for you to drive, with it being quite a big purchase decision it's something you want to get right first time.

Normally the 2.2 i-dtec isn't avaible anymore.

Success..... and choose Milan Red

Welcome to the forum! As darkflemish mentioned they have stopped producing the 2.2 so you will only get second hand 2.2's unless your really lucky to find one that hasn't sold.

Also, your not too far from me, if you go into the Peterborough Honda i dealt with Phil he was extremely helpful and a nice bloke.

Excellent Choice, you can't go wrong With the 9G
I've never driven the 2.2, but do you really need more Power than the 1.6 offers? I had a spin in the 1.6 and loved it. Why not put some extra cash in Equipment, With the Ex? And of course - Milano red

That'd be Marshalls Boongate. Not a bad crowd there, I'm pretty sure they could source you a brand new 2.2 9G.

Welcome from another Diesel City Civicer !!

Thanks guys,

Milano Red is the choice of both myself and my wife, but there is still limited stock of the 2.2 with Honda UK in various (non Milano Red) colours.

Yes, it was Phil from Marshall Honda in Boongate we spoke with. Probably the nicest salesman we encountered on our tour of every manufacturer-dealer in Peterborough. Assuming we can agree a good deal he should be making some commission from us soon.

Need? No... Want? YES!
In all honesty the 1.6 is a brilliant engine which I really liked, but I found some deals on the 2.2 (on a prominent online-broker website) where the 2.2 was cheaper than the 1.6. The deals have gone now, but it still has me thinking...

Thanks again for your advise and the warm welcome.

Brilliant guy i must say he was half the reason I bought it from them. Good luck with the purchase and maybe we'll bump into each other

Then GO FOR IT!! The 2.2 is the only engine I haven't driven in the 9G...maybe I should do something about it. Not too keen on the dieselnoise myself, but the Power is a different matter.

Good Luck! And you can't go wrong when it comes to colours on the 9G...looks good in any colour

Thank you all for your advice.

We collected our lovely new Civic last weekend. At the time of purchase there were still new 2.2 Civics available from Honda stock, but ultimately I couldn't make the numbers add-up (or rather I could make them add-up, but the result was not what I wanted). The choice was therefore between the 1.6 i-DTEC or the 1.8 i-VTEC. On paper the diesel was the better choice over its intended 10-year life (the break-even point being at about 4 years for our annual mileage), but my wife didn't like the amount of torque produced by the 1.6 i-DTEC, and the - possibly erroneous - worry about DPFs pushed us towards the 1.8 i-VTEC. The Eco button on the petrol version affects (i.e. neuters) the performance of the 1.8 i-VTEC much more than its diesel brother which has made it easier for her to move from a 1.2 "city" hatchback to a larger 1.8L engine.

The guys at Marshall in Peterborough (all of them, but particularly Phil) made the whole experience of buying a new car very easy and stress free. Very helpful and never pushy.
