Almost a Civic owner so Hi! And a little advice required...

Hi guys!

I'm very pleased to say that I will soon be a Civic owner - probably with a 2010 2.2 I-CDTI Type S GT that I've placed a refundable deposit on with a Honda main dealer.

It's a car I've lusted after for a few years, and so when my 55 Accord had a bump and proved uneconomical to repair I set my heart on the Type S as a replacement.

I test drove yesterday and it was a very mixed experience. It only has 27k on the clock for an Aug registered 10 plate which isn't bad. The body and paintwork is exceptional, and the interior is spotless. In terms of handling and speed it drove amazingly... BUT....

There were a couple of issues that took the gloss off, and although the sales exec has assured me that they will be sorted by the time I pick it up on Sat, I just wanted to check with you guys that they aren't anything to worry about.

1) Turned the key, and the fan started up with a noisy low pitched hum. Far more noisy and weirdly low sounding than a fan should be. Hopefully they will have identified and rectified by Sat, but is it a symptom of something more serious that I should be wary of?

2) During the course of the drive the clutch developed an incredibly loud squeak. I seriously wouldn't be able to live with it. I've done a bit of research on here and it seems as though the solution is a replacement master cylinder and pedal box? I was going to ring the guy tomorrow and suggest this approach but don't want to appear to be teaching the Honda guys how to suck eggs, but the last thing I want to hear on Saturday is the term WD40 and be back in there the following week with my warranty documents. Right diagnosis? Sensible to call?

3) Steering seemed a little heavy in comparison with the accord when reversing back onto the forecourt. Nothing major - is this common?

Well that's it. I don't think it's too much to worry about, and apart from those issues the car is an absolute gem so I'd be disappointed to back out.

Anyway. That's my story. Any comments are appreciated.

Phil

Point 1 - the civic fans always come on when you turn the key and are very loud. Check with the air con set to auto that the fans stop and start. Sounds normal.

Clutch - needs the proper fix as you say.

Steering is not particularly light so I wouldn't worry.

The only worry I think you have is the clutch which being a Honda dealer they should know the proper fix isn't WD40!

Got my 2.2 ES 10 days ago from Honda dealer. There were a few different issues from yours but I too found the steering on the heavy side. On second test drive, took my tyre gauge and pump - tyres were 15% under pressure. Much better when corrected but still slightly on the heavy side on slow turns - especially on cold mornings before the tyres have warmed up. Btw, if your car has the glass roof, check that the electric blinds open and close freely. This is a common fault and the front one was sticking half way on mine. The Honda-approved fix is a 4-hr job involving dropping the roof lining. Re clutch, as already stated don't buy until this is fixed to yr satisfaction. Good luck!

PS If the car you buy doesn't have front fog-light covers, buy a set without delay! The lamps are vulnerable to stone chips and a replacement Honda sealed unit costs 130 fitted. I was slow in ordering my covers (from Wayne on this forum for 10) and got a smashed lens a couple of days before they arrived.

Cheers Mike. That sounds like really good advice about the fog light covers. I'll search him out when the car is in my possession.
I've already made a note on my order form to check the blinds when I pick it up as it seems like a common fault.

On the plus side I've negotiated an extension on the warranty to 2 years so there's a lot of peace of mind included that things I miss immediately will be picked up and subsequently sorted.

Wow, really useful thank you. I will forward on in my email to the sales guy. Even if he does think I'm being a pedantic fuss, I'll probably never see him again, but I'll be seeing the CTS every day!

Oh my . You'll see from my correct spelling later in the post that it was a thoughtless slip rather than my brain actually being made of cheese. Thanks for highlighting and make me feel like a fool in my first Civic thread!

Sorry, I wasn't really having a pop, just made me laugh. Only tongue in cheek-My bad!

Welcome to the forum, mate. I'll look out for you on here in case you need any info I might be able to help you with!
Good idea to get a warranty extension. I extended my civic's warranty on its 3rd birthday by a further 3 years for peace of mind.

Haha I know mate it was mate, no need to apologise. I like to think that I'd be pointing out the same glaring mistakes once I've extended my tenure here a little!

Cheers for the help.

Welcome to Civinfo.
Whilst the fan is loud when on full I don't reckon a low hum is normal. My car has produced a low hum recently, only occasionally on start up for a few minutes, it clears but is not normal. Hopefully they will sort it out-be great if you let us know what the fix is.

Update:

firstly, I got the mileage wrong in my OP. It's actually only 23k so that's even better! Anyway...

I have received not one, but two emails from Honda today.
The first I was very happy to ignore, as it was a quote from Honda insurance offering me a policy for 600+, which is over double what my current insurance company have charged! Cheeky gets

The second however was from the Sales Exec informing me that they have replaced the clutch master cylinder, the alloy wheel and paint guys have performed the very small amount of magic that they needed to perform, and he's also ordered me a new spare key as they seemed to only have one there.

I've replied enquiring about the air con fan, but essentially it seems as though the inspection on Saturday morning will be a formality... very exciting.

He's just replied again to say that he's sorted the fan and it's now 'as quiet as it should be'...

That doesn't necessarily mean it's quiet, but I guess I'll see on Saturday. I'll ask him what it was then pass on any info I get.
