Hello from Worcs!!

Hi, just joined as thinking of replacing our aged 1.9 TDI Bora and after reading the horror stories of the newer 2.0 TDI VAG engines have decided to go for a petrol Civic as our circumstances have changed (semi-retired) and we do mainly short trips now.

Anyhow I have been and still am a Honda motorcycle owner and have always been very impressed with build quality/reliability/longevity etc so it made sense really to have a look at a Civic and have heard good reports.

So, what would you recommend (Type-R apart that is!), looking to spend up to around the 5k mark

I've considered repairing a salvage car so what's the availability of second hand body panels like?

..a few questions there, look forward to reading some interesting replies!

Jim

Hi Jim; welcome!

The 1.8 is the one to go for if you want a non-R petrol.
For the model... what extras are you looking for? There's a lot of choice!

Not really fussed on spec, I'll just grab one when it comes along at the right price!!

Has anybody got any experience with repairing a salvage car? I've seen a couple that require headlamps, front bumper, a wing and maybe a bonnet and if I use 2nd hand bits I should save 1500 at least and as I keep my cars until they finally die I'm not bothered that it'll be a CAT-D repaired

..just a thought!

Welcome along matey, I know that you want a petrol, I bought a cat d front end damage that had been repaired a 2.2 tdci it cost me 6k on a 58plate I have had it for 18 months with no problems.
if you do a quick search on ebay for civic breaking you should find a breakers that specialises in hondas I have researched this in the past but I cant remember where they were located, you may find a breakers with a spairs and repairs civic for you and he might have all the parts you need on the rack.

I would go for the 2.2 rather than the 1.8 petrol

My last car was the 2.2 and it was great.. i would consider another one after my petrol type R days.

I am sure you will find one for the right price, just look at the wiki on common faults and if you wanted any parts i am sure the forum is will be able to help too.

Yeh, the 2.2s in our budget are high milers and probably needing clutches, DMFs, leaky turbos etc so could be money pits

Thanks for all the replies anyhow, most informative!

well, the car had been delivered and first thing of concern is the VSA and ABS check system are being displayed!

..car appears is in very good condition though, can hardly hear the engine its that quiet

so, presumably it'll need plugging into some diagnostics checker before I take it for its MOT but I won't be able to drive it there!!

Looks great, you can source some parts in the for sale section on this site.the ABS could be a sensor by the damaged area..I would get all the plastics off and wheel and have a good look see if anything is twisted. Good luck with the project and keep us posted on updates!

* Edit* found some relevant info in the Wiki (sorry, I'm new but now finding my way around!!)

Another nuisance, the handbooks/user manuals are missing, I don't suppose they are available anywhere for download (I have looked but can only seem to find US versions)

..at least I got the locking wheel nut tool
