Question Sevicing

Hi Civic fans, I am not an owner, but interested in becoming one. No money at present, just checking out your views and observations, as opposed to the mags who don,t own cars in the real world.
Was a bit taken aback at servicing costs, especially for diesel, as outlined in Autoexpress's recent article on the Civic as a secondhand buy. On the upside was asking a secondhand car dealer about the availability of new shape Civics. After an intake of air through his teeth he warned of being thin on the ground, high residuals etc.,which is good news for you guys if you are thinking of selling. He also insisted that any servicing could be done by any VAT registered garage without invalidating the manufacturer's warranty, but I suppose he might say that. On the other hand I was only talking to him socially, not as a prospective customer, if that's possible to a salesman. Wondered if anybody out there had their cars serviced at a non-dealer garage?
PS Totally impressed that engine timing is done by chain drive and not plastic belt.
