Welcome to

Has any work been done on the vehicle recently?

Have you tried resetting the fuel cut off switch inside the dashboard? https://www.civinfo.com/forum/bugs-f...ia-switch.html

Was the key left in the ignition whilst the battery was reconnected?

if the key was clapped it would not start at all since the ignition is disabled.

so not the issue here since you can get it going, just badly.

not a diesel driver so can't help any further
