Pioneer AVH-X5500BT Install

Posted pics in another thread but thought that it deserved it's own thread.

Bascially i've had my FN2 for 4 months now and i'm loving it but the standard stereo is woeful and it needed to go. I'm no boy racer and neither am i an audio purist but it simply wasn't good enough.

So i purchased;
Pioneer AVH-X5500BT
Impulse facia kit
Reversing camera kit

....and handed the whole lot to Hannah Auto sounds in Glasgow. Total installed price installed was £920 or so. So not cheap, but as you know the impulse kit is £200 of that and it's a huge job to install. The until itself is currently available for £350 from caraudiocentre.co.uk which is a steal IMHO.

I've now had the kit for a few weeks and im really pleased with it.

Highlights for me are;
- It sounds great
- The OS is easy to use
- Plugged in a 64gb USB stick and it works perfectly
- Bluetooth streaming is great
- Handsfree quality (via std parrot module) is excellent
- Background, button illumination and font colour is all configurable

Concerns;
- It's clearly not cheap
- No sat nav at that price, but i use googlemaps anyway
- The angle of the install sometimes makes the screen difficult to read
- Searching for artists on USB mode can be quite slow...not unusable but not smartphone / ipad responsive
- The fit of the facia plate isn't 100% perfect at the airbag but i dont think i'm alone in this

I know many of you have gone for the 920 / 950 option but this could be an option for those with smaller budgets or those who don't need sat nav. Bigger screen is nice too.

Anyway enough nonsense, here's some pics

Looks great plus you can still have satnav by using App mode as there are several navigation apps available.

Looks great mate! Looks identical to mine Pioneer do make some 1st class HU. Read the manual and set the guide lines up correctly on the camera, makes a world of difference when reverse parking at ASDA

Looks great! i have the exact same setup. which reversing camera did you go for?

my only gripe with the HU is that i find it pretty unresponsive via the touch screen. There seems to be sufficient lag, which is anoying when just trying to select a playlist. Do you find this with yours?

No idea which camera it is i'm afraid as Hannah spec'd it.

The headunit seems responsive to me, but there is a definite lag which seems to be processor lag to me. So if you are hitting "next" on the folder within USB the first time you do it, it' works well.....but trying to skip three in quick succession you notice the lag.

Same when you search for an artist.

On the double / single DIN thing i didn't need a double DIN but given most of the cost is in the install and the adaptor it didn't' make the install that much more expensive.

The only lag on my 940BT is when using the App mode but you have to expect these delays when the headunit and phone are swapping information.

Yeah well just scrolling down a list of artist or playlists etc seems to take an age.

I'm so used to an iPhone touch screen that suppose I expect the same level of response from others.

Looks really nice, have been thinking of fitting 8500 bt myself as the screen is removable. Did you change the speakers at all?

If you are using an android phone you can use an app called arliberator which will mirror your phone on your head unit, just search on youtube for 'arliberator'.

That doesn't sound right, there is a slight lag when using big satnav apps on mine but scrolling down track lists is as quick as doing so off the micro SD (instant).

Mirroring sucks, so much better using the big touchscreen on the head unit than the tiny screen on a phone when driving.

Pioneer SPH-DA100 Appradio2 Arliberator Samsung Galaxy S3 Torque OBD - YouTube

You can use the touchscreen on the head unit, when the phone connects you put it aside and use the touchscreen on the head unit.

The mirroring looks much better on these later units, mine is dumb.

Looks good. How do you change the time on the original display, as the old controls were on the oem stereo.

Hold down the mode button on the steering wheel until the date/time starts flashing then use the channel/volume buttons to change.

Speakers are stock but the sound is much improved. I'm sure it would be still better if I changed them too but i'm happy for now.

I'm aware of arliberator but i can't be arsed rooting my phone and i've got a nice compromise with mp3s on a usb stick and everything else streamed via bluetooth.
