JBL GTO front speaker install in FK3

hi all.

Well - it was all going so well.
SILENTCOAT EXTRA installed in front 2 doors.
Acoustic Convoluted foam stuck to it.. now sounds like the door cards are back on, even though the door cards are still off.. so , looking forward to getting the speakers in and getting everything tidied up..

but then.. Horror! Speakers dont fit! (yes, i got the spacer ring .. still doesnt fit). Im hoping for sagely nods of "hah.. yeah... been there done that, this is what i did..." here..

The speaker hole as im sure youre aware has a sort of keyhole-shape. But the frame/supports on the JBL speakers seem to be too big.

I think i know what im going to have to do - but im hoping im wrong..

..do i have to cut the bits of door obstructing the speaker away? If so, what was your approach guys? (also , do I need to consider anti-rust measures?)

Poxy honda. Why why why why why does this have to be so hard. Cut a bit of support strut away to reveal a true 2DIN hole, replace a whole airvent just to get a 2DIN hole.. then start hacking away at the car just to get a speaker in .. sigh... oh and while im at it honda.. if you werent so damn cheap with the sound deadening, and speakers and HU I wouldnt have to resort to attacking the car in the first place! *sulk!*

aaanyway. rant over. chaps - can i get your advice please?
Many thanks!

What you mean don't fit bud, door card won't go back on or literally speaker won't fit in speaker hole?

All good so far - but the speaker just doesnt fit in the hole. grr. pretty sure im going to have to cut the speaker hole to be a proper circle, instead of the keyhole shape.

sigh.

There seem to be a few JBL GTO speakers, which ones did you buy? Any 6.5" speaker should fit (if they aren't too deep). If you really like the speakers then I would cut away the offending part of the inner door - sure it will only be a small amount of metal thats fouling if they are 6.5".

Try and prevent the swarf from going inside the door & paint the exposed metal afterwards.

Ah - the man himself! was just going to drop you a PM to ask if youd cast your eye over my thread! Thanks for taking a look , really appreciate it.

As it happens - for the fronts - JBL GTO6508C. got a similar JBL GTO coax series for the rears (wonder if im going to get the same problem.. bet i am, as the woofers i expect are identical to the fronts..sigh.

I got some 14mm MDF rings (assuming the idea was to put the rings against the door, and slip the speaker on top of the ring.. im pretty sure theres enough room to accommodate the speaker, just cant get it past these "corners".

wonder if i increased the ring depth (aw man, that sounds so wrong! hahahahaha.. ahem.. sorry... ) from 14 to, i dunno.. 20mm? .. would this sidestep the problem? ... but then wouldnt i have problems getting the door cards back on?

shall i get a photo posted so you can see what i mean?

Quick pick upload..

Heres the speaker hole.. "keyhole" shape... its the bottom part thats causing the hassle - as the the speaker support/frame thing widens too much before the speaker is fully inserted.

just so everyone can see what im on about.

Looks like the bottom part needs some attention. Make a template from the back of the speaker to show how much you need to remove. I have 19mm spacers on mine so maybe the few extra mm stops mine from fouling.

Have you tried the speaker at different positions. Looks like the legs from the speaker frame are making contact. If you spin the speaker around at a different angle it could clear the door speaker hole.

19mm... hm.. maybe my spacers are too thin.. wonder if the extra 5mm is just enough.. hmm.... any idea of the max spacer size before the door card wont fit, per chance?

hi tony -

yeah - gave this a good go. really doesnt wanna fit, suspecting spacers are too thin (hope so!) or im going to have to cut or bend the fouling-zone a bit.
yikes!

You can pack your spacers out 5mm or so using card or washers and see if that helps. I dont know how much thicker you can go over 19mm without catching the door card. A jigsaw and fine tooth metal blade would probably be easiest.

Of course it would have been easier if Honda had made the hole circular in the first place.

yeah, think i'll have to experiment a bit. certainly worth a try - cutting isnt reversible, and all that. i'd better get a 19mm set on the way soon if it works, got the booked in for tinting in 2 weeks - suspect they'll want the windows to be able to go up and down - which means i need the door cards in .. which means i need the speakers solved!

oh - almost forgot to ask - did you have to make your own cable connection to your speakers from the wiring in the door?

You dont need to modify the speaker connections, just strip off the plastic plug and you will find a pair of spades in there.

yeah spotted that today when i had another little look. Well, i simulated having thicker spacer rings using cardboard on top of the spacer rings - still wont go.

so.. cutting it is. Got a friend who has an angle grinder so i can zap off the bits that are in the way. Really hoped it wouldnt come to this - but hey. these speakers are bloody going in.

and the tweeters look like i'll need to pack some material of some kind around it to wedge the tweeter in the door-tweeter-holder. hm.

if i had any idea how much hassle this whole thing would have been.... hm.. im sure it'll sound lovely afterwards. (it better had! hehe)

wish me luck - first time ever with an angle grinder....... eep!
