I've found The Holy Grail

Well it is for me at least!

I've always wanted to be able to connect my phone to the car so that the audio from the phone (music, video's, youtube, netflix etc) comes through the car speakers.

I regularly make journeys or an hour with my kids in the car and wanted some sort of in car entertainment that was completely discreet, very cheap (ie free) and had the ability to show video with audio loud enough for the kids to hear from the back ie via the car stereo.

I can't justify spending the money on an xcarlink or something like that so have been very frustrated with having what is essentially a powerful computer (HTC One X - Android) with the whole internet, lots of albums, movies etc and was desperate to get it talking to my car.

So.... Do you want to know how I've been streaming music from my phone wirelessly to my car? And had Netflix playing? And a couple of films I have on the phone? And Youtube?

If so then respond here and I'll tell you how I did it for free without wires and without taking anything apart or adding anything.
The only thing needed is an Android phone and a 8th Gen Civic with (and here is a clue) bluetooth handsfree.....

So, the kids are watching a film on your phone, but the sound is coming from the car speakers?

Would giving the kids headphones be better? You could turn off the rear speakers and play your own music in the front whilst they are watching the film and using headphones in the back.

Eh? What you talking about Willis? I'm not having wires everywhere in my car attatched to my kids heads because they would be pulling the phone all over the place and how could I plug in two lots of headphones at the same time? And what about when I want my music played from my phone through the car? Nope, that wasn't a solution I wanted.

Fair enough. To answer your question, if you use a splitter you can plug in 2 pairs or more.

But what if you want to listen to music and let them watch their film?

I assume you are using your car handsfree as a headset, and an app on your phone to output the sound to it? Would be interested to know which one, the one I tried had shocking sound quality.

Firstly, the bad news. Audio quality isn't great. I think I know why, but I don't know if anything can be done about it.....

1) Download this app for your phone clicky. Its free but there is a paid one for less than 3 so try the free then pay for the pay one.
Its an Android version of Apple's SIRI. You talk and tell it what to do etc.. Ask it things and it searches the net to tell you the answer, gives you web pages or you can operate your phone by it by getting it to open apps, make calls and type and send text's etc. Its actually a very good app in its own right.

2) Make sure phone is connected to car by bluetooth for hands free and an internet connection is set (your 3g connection).

3) Run the app, tell it to.... play music, open music player, open youtube app, open netflix app etc

For some reason, the app will output its sound (like when it answers your questions etc) via the bluetooth connection, which your car then thinks its making a call so goes into phone mode (sat nav still works, cuts off radio like when you make/receive calls) and anything audio from the phone is played through the car stereo!!!!!!!

Tadaa!!!!!

Now the issue with the sound, I think, is because the audio for phone calls is produced by the car as low quality mono sound as opposed to stereo.
So the sound is mono, quite bassy and wooley, but you can get used to it for what it is and it is quite useable. It may be possible with another app to setup an equalizer to assist with improving the sound quality or even splitting the sound into stereo. I know there are programs for it for the PC so in theory it should be possible to write an app for android...

Anyways, I hope this helps people like its helped me. This way the only cable is the charger if I decide to plug it in, the phone is attached to the satnav control knob/button by a Wonder Magnet another clicky so it looks perfectly natural there and is very discrete and its all very good!

I am in no way connected with any persons or companies used in this setup, but I'm gonna drop the write of the app a message telling him how much I love him and that I'll have his babies...

I think the sound quality is just too poor to be used frequently.

It's not great, but I'm trying to find out what Bluetooth profile the hft uses then see if I can generate that profile to be used by my phone...

My OEM SSD sat nav works like this: if I connect my iPhone via Bluetooth, it plays the sound of whatever you are opening on your iPhone: YouTube, games, music, etc.

If I connect the phone via USB cable, it plays only the iPod tracks stored on the phone...
