If you saw smoke coming out of the connects2 box then something is definitely wrong. I'd check to make sure there's no short circuits, bare wires showing or melted cables before going further. Looking at the inside of the connects2 box, I'd say it's had it, that IC Chip shouldnt have a hole melted in it lol.
There's a fuse box under the steering wheel to the right, I'd imagine the fuse for the display and such will be in there, might want to check that if you say the display won't work even with the connects2 plugged in. Couldn't tell you which fuse it is, but theres a schematic somewhere you'll be able to look at.
It could be down to the wrong patch lead being connected to your new head unit that's caused something to blow up, can't say for sure though.
Just out of interest, did you try plugging the black 3.5mm that looks like an aux Jack into anything labelled other than "Steering wheel controlls"?
