Double din map update via hack

I have just bought an SD card off eBay to update the maps on my pioneer f940 BT.

I assumed all I had to do was pop the SD card into the unit and let it update, but apparently U have to 'hack' into the unit with the SD and then move some files onto it via my computer.

Communicating with the guy who sold it to me assures me its fine but that it is indeed a 'hack'

Would this be ok? I don't want to interfere with the original pioneer software.

I don't know enough about these 'hacks' so any advice is much appreciated.
