Type R Aux cable question.

I’ve bought a cable from Amazon that plugs into the Aux socket on the back of the stereo but it’s just a straight cable. Most of the posts I have found seem to have some sort of box attached.
So my question is will I be able to play music from my phone (6s) buy just using this cable or do I need some sort of funky box thing?
Also will this charge the phone?
Just to add I realise the fitting of this cable is convoluted and involves trim removal which I’m fine with
