Well I've had my Type-R for all of 72 hours and I'm delighted with it. Drove to work in it this morning but since I've arrived at work, there's been a pretty good dumping of snow.
Any tips for safe and reliable driving in the snow, in a Type-R? My car is standard and I've obviously no time to change tyres, etc. - so really just looking for tips regarding gear change and driving tips, etc. Most will likely be common sense but would like to hear from those of us that have experienced it.
I realy don't agree with you. My CTR going very well in snow ( better than couple of other cars like nissan Juke, Mazda 626, Honda civic 96)
Why you think that is tr not good in snow??
VSA must be turned ON, and a car doing well. In CTR have enought power, that can be used iVSA ON.
For the amount of snow we get i would not worry, my Type S is fine in the snow just take it easy. I had mine sliding round a round about this morning on purpose, great fun but stability control kept kicking in to correct it.... It works...
I ve had fun discovering the vsa is absolutely idiot proof on snow and cuts power to get you around any corner even if you plant your foot hard down...amazing !!
Didnt know what to expect from khumo tyres, but they grip fine in snow, wet or dry and the dam things are quiet too.
you can always knock it off for that, but for me its great coming out of corners and mine even wapped the abs on when i wasnt braking so i remain well impressed...
Mine works fine..... in the corners I felt it breaking independent wheels, can’t fault it personally. Coming off a roundabout on to a slip road it automatically braked the front right wheel and kept me from sliding into the barrier.
Also starting off in the snow the system copes well in keeping traction, better than the Volvo i had.
Personally, I didn't have a problem driving in the snow last year. The Bridgestones on my car were fine and didn't seem any better or worse than my previous 1.8 Civic.
The one thing that sucked was the high idle speed when cold. The car park at work is on a slope - nothing major, just a hundred and fifty yards uphill slope to the exit. Because it idled so fast as soon as you let the clutch out the wheels span. I tried moving up the slope forwards, backwards, diagonally VSA on/off with no joy. In the end I just sat there until the revs dropped to 800 and its was ok.

Let it warm up and the revs drop before setting off otherwise when you release the clutch it will chug along (VSA on and kicking in) or wheel spin you into something unpleasant
In the dry the mini round about near my house catches me out quite often forgetting its still idling high, letting the clutching up and racing across it :facepalm4:
mrs refuses to drive the civic in the snow its not the best where we live, vsa best to switch it off it tries to hard to stop you spinning,we live in a hilly area and last year was frightening so many close scrapes, best advice from me if you can get the winter tyres.
Setting of in 2nd gear is always good save wheelspining change down gears to assist with the slowing down, gentle on braking then you should be fine. DON'T SPEED. ;-)
Drive slow sod the others I was leading traffic this morning snow hitting the screen, rds slushy, -1 my top speed 48 came to a very steep hill and yep got overtook by an idiot who then realised that the conditions for front of traffic was poor and he ended up going slow
I did a round trip of 100 miles in heavy snow the other day, car was perfect. Drove into my close and managed to skid into the kerb! no damage to car as far as i can see, do you think its work getting my tracking checked???
That happened to me a couple of yrs back drove back in a sudden downfall of snow (it literally brought cars to stand still all routes were hills so it was a slow drive home) got home about an hr to do 6miles then slipped on my own rd and went up a flat kerb and kissed a sign post cracked all my front end up. Typical drove up hill and down hill and crashed doing 5mph around a bend
