Insurance for an 18 Y/O

Hi guys,

I've had my eye on a Type S for quite a long time now while I'm saving money, but one thing I'm worried about is insurance. I've currently got a black box in my Peugeot 1-slow-6, all of the readouts have signalled that my driving is really smooth and sensible. These readouts are apparently available to all insurers, but do they make a real difference?

BUT the type S I really want is the 1.8, fairly large for an 18 year old driver and my worry is that the insurance will be seriously expensive or even worse not even available. After doing a few comparisons using a Type S GT which I believe to be insurance group 11? I've found that quotes have been coming in at anything from £1500-£8000, and John Lewis insurance (to which I have a discount) wouldn't insure me outright, presumably due to the large engine.

Does anyone have any experience in getting insurance at such a young age on a civic? Chris Knott insurance don't insure under 21's from what I've read, and I would only be modifying the front grill, colour coding bumpers and possibly alloys.

Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi buddy I had a type s gt 1.8 when I was 19 so nearly the same age and I was with direct line cost me 1,200 with no modifications so at 18 for it to be 1,500 that dosent seem to bad,
Have you had a look at quin direct they claim to specialise in Young drivers,
Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the replies so far, Quin seem like they are quite reasonable I'll definitely do a quote soon :) Do you know of any other young person's insurance companies?

That's true, it's not always about the car, I live in a safe postcode and also have my blackbox readouts to prove I drive safely.. But I think it's all overshadowed by the fact I'll be 18 and therefore really high risk!

You need to find a specialist company who deal i the specific car and your age.
I got insured on my old MK3 Golf Vr6 when i was 18 for only £958 with HIC i stayed with them until this year when i brought the civic. They wanted £1200 to insure the civic and I'm now 24 years old with 7 years no claims discount. Now with diamond and pay £490 fully comp.

How would I go about finding a company specialising in a Type S though? I guess the dealer is a good place to start, but I don't imagine them being that helpful unless I buy the car direct from them, which I may not!
I'll have a search for a company specialising in Honda's or something?

To the other replies, it definitely seems like there are good deals out there, it's just a case of trawling through the awful quotes! Do you guys use comparison sites or go direct to each insurer?
