Hi - this is my first post as the proud (at the moment) new owner of an 07 EX diesel.
I want to add a towbar and although I'm fairly experienced doing it on older cars and the bar is no problem I need some clues as to the wiring.
I assume I'll need full bypass relays and I believe it doesnt need "low voltage or pulsed signal wiring kits.
Is this all correct and any further hints or tips on fitting would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

I used a Witter HN61Q tow bar (£215) with a 7 pin car specific wiring kit (£111) from Towequipe.

The tow bar itself just bolts on instead of the rear crash bar. I used a removable ball because I have reverse parking sensors fitted.

The (expensive) wiring kit has interposing plug-sockets to connect to the rear lights as well as provision to inhibit the rear fog lamp and reverse parking unit when there is a trailer connected.
The wiring kit includes an electronic unit which does all the extra flash rate / bulb failure stuff.

The biggest bug-bear is just the amount of trim and panels that have to be removed to get the tow bar and wiring loom in place. See the parking sensor Wiki for some info on removal of the rear bumper and trim.

Thanks ATmega168 (what a mouthfull )
I still need top know whether I can use the much cheaper version of relays and crimps. Its only for occasional use and the towbars no problem from Towsure (about £65 + vat) as Ive a trade a/c.
Thanks Chris

Hi just fitted towbar used 7 core cable and audible indicator relay,no problems.
cable colours on my car are, behind left boot panel block connector to back lights.
red cable lights
blue cable indicator
green cable brake.

cable colours on right side behind panel are.
red cable lights
brown cable indicator
green cable brakes

On the wiring loom on right side near wheelarch were the cable goes to back lights in tailgate, there is a plug taped to the loom you need yellow wire to connect fog lights.hope this helps fitting towbar is very easy.:)

I read your post to say that (apart from the thing to beep when you indicate) you didn't use any sort of relays or other electronics to separate the trailer from the car wiring. In other words, just what we always used to do on cars until recently. Is that right? Is there any point spending £100 plus on car-specific wiring?

Silly question - have you actually tried it with a trailer yet?

Hi only used one relay from halfords. yes i have tried it just done 900 miles with caravan. and also used with trailer.I think the car specific wiring just stops you from splicing into car loom and you just unplug light cables ,and rejion with the new blocks on the new wiring loom.

I had a dedicated oem plug in job on my crv and it was so easy to fit but I did notice that there was modules in line it wasn't just connector plugs and that's why me too I'm after an oem one
If I can get a few people interested I may contact someone to see if we could get some money off as I don't want to cut into the loom to fit one myself.

The hardest thing I found with fitting a towbar was the bumber removed and then getting it to fit back on nice, had to dremel away the bottom of the bumper for the towbar not to foul on it.
The one I fit was second hand so I took the time to treat all the areas with surface rust, welds and exposed fasteners first.
Wiring is quite easy, although I didn't wire in the caravan lead, just the one you'd use for a bike rack.
I didn't need any relays, and all is functioning fine. Just bring the cable up through one of the existing grommets, and use something like run+tap 3M connectors.

Hello i have just joined this forum. Car is a mk 8

I am looking for help.

I have bought a witter detachable towbar and 7 pin electrics from PF Jones.

I have paid a garage to fit the towbar and electrics. They have fitted the towbar but say the 2m cable supplied isnt long enough, as they want to connect near the rear passenger door.

The supplier says it is long enough but im caught in the middle.

I have tried to take the interior apart and can see behind the rear wheel arch cover and see the loom.

i want some help to be able to take the rear wheel arch cover off and see if the loom goes down to the boot, but struggling to get the full cover off.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, i dont want to break any of the trim.

also is the 7pin electrics just solder and heatshrink?

Welcome to :civinfo:

The garage are correct, you need to get to the front of the rear wheel arch to pick up the reversing cable. If the cable isn't long enough, then extend it.

Getting the interior out is a pain, Google for a solution (it's been a while since I removed mine). If I get a mo, I'll take a look for you.

I soldered my connections, no issues since.

Good luck.

When splicing the loom, where is best to splice the loom. I plan on using scotch lock connectors and want to make sure I connect in the right place before it splits.

I cant manage to get the photo onto this thread that I have circled in red where I plan to cut in but it is the upper vertical part.

does the loom come from the top of the car down or up from the arch and split?
