Suspension Upgrade from Eibachs

Hi,

Currently running Eibach 30mm drop and standard shocks (well back 2 are Bilstein) and have been getting some tyre rub for years on after-market wheels on the crappy roads around where I live.

However, I recently hit a massive pothole and there is now a metallic noise from the rear instead of the normal tyre rub but this will now push me to change the suspension as I am fed up having to reduce speed every time I see a pothole or dip in the road (mainly small country roads).

Consequently, what would you guys recommend. It is a daily driver and currently does not go on track but will do once a turbo is fitted! However, I do push it to the limit at times and am willing to sacrifice comfort for handling if necessary to avoid slowing down for every damn pothole or dip in the road.

Coilovers - Tein, KW? EDFC worthwhile?

Any thoughts

Steve

Having just checked, I am running Team Dynamics 1.2 with ET45, 15 mm spacers all round and 225/40 R18 ASM2 tyres along with the 30mm Eichback springs.

I can't GUARANTEE that you won't get any rubbing because I'm not there to look at your setup. However, you can adjust the height and the damping, that should stop the scrubbing. They're WAY more versatile than lowering springs.

Is there anyone with the same setup on here as you and has.MeisterR's?

Not aware of anyone having the same setup as nd with the Meisters. How easy is it to adjust tge height and damping and would it affect the FRS?

Seems that the MeisterRs are the way forward. Did I not read on the forum that there were issues with noise on these?

Think the early revision had a knock but didn't you say you retightened the top mount bolts and yours went @SilverCider ?

No odd noises from mine which are the newer CRD+

Mine have an occasional tapping noise and everything is tight. The aluminum top mounts will transfer noise from the rest of the suspension so could be coming from anywhere.

Spoke to Meister earlier today and they stated that there should be no noise from them at all, although as SilverCider says 'it could be transferred from the rest of the suspension'.

Anyway, ordered a new set of CRD+ for £787.55 delivered and we'll see.

What height do you recommend setting them at?

Grinspeed set my Meisters for a 20mm drop at the front and 10mm at the rear. I've got 6kg front and 5kg rear springs. Camber is -2.2 front and -1 rear. No toe anywhere (at my request: some go for a wilder setup though!). Adjustable damping set for softest it can be on road and gets hardened up on trackdays.

Setup works great for me. No rubbing with 18x8" TD 1.2s (ET45 offset) with a 10mm front spacer to clear brakes. Previously, some Eibach 25mm lowering springs were horrendous and my front arches took a kicking. This setup is loads better. Hope that helps.

I suppose I will be selling them otherwise they will be rotting away in the garage!

I think for best handling a bigger drop at the front is required. Damping-wise, the softest setting is fine for country roads. You can experiment and find what you like. I was recently at Cadwell and had them set to the hardest they'd go...an instructor told me to soften them up! Sometimes harder isn't always better :laugh2:

Ps yes, you're correct: 30mm. Horrid things.

Makes sense. I would probably have them set to a harder setting than softest but not all the way!

Agreed, that is what I am after but I am looking to get the best handling I can for the very bumpy B roads around here. I can easily alter the damping at home, ride height will be more awkward though.

For me, reducing the damage being done to the car and the fact I need to brake heavily before dips in the road is the issue. Suffering an uncomfortable ride and spine injuries are irrelevant. I am simply looking for the fastest speed from A to B. However, as the car will be modified (turbo or supercharger) and then put on track is also in the back of my mind, hence the problem.

Will you be selling the springs? Also, do you have an aftermarket exhaust? I'm thinking of lowering 30mm and getting a custom 2.5" but worried that it wont like being ontop of the rear torsion bar once it's lower. Any advice welcome, thanks in advance. Jack

Yes, they will be going up for sale shortly once the coilovers are fitted on Friday. I have a Martelius exhaust, which 2.75" I think but have no problems with it and the Eibachs or rear ARB.

All fitted at ABP yesterday. Had fun and games with the height setting so rear is currently as high as possible mainly due to wheel arch damage - need to get that sorted at some point.

Anyway off for a play with the damper settings. Rears easy enough to find but which part of the plastic trim under the bonnet needs removing to access the front damper adjuster?

Sorted! Just have to play about to find the best setting now.

I have got the height on the highest setting on the rear due to wheel arch damage and lowered at the front to about 25mm drop and dampers at halfway on front and halfway plus 5 clicks to hard at the rear. ABP set it at approx 25 mm drop all round and mid way on dampers (due to wheel arch damage to get me home) but we had to higher the rear to fuĺl height in the end. Anyway, took the car for a spin today and the turn in is far sharper, body roll minimal and I failed to introduce much understeer, if any, as roads busy (cyclists), I will try again, when the roads are quierer as I would like to see how the car handles the transition from understeer to oversteer. Will play around with damper settings but will probably have to get the wheel arches rolled slightly, anyone done this? I found someone to do a proper job and roughly £40 per corner. Is that reasonable? Btw no noise from the coilovers at all! Needless to say ABP did a professional job as always. Spine suffering at the momeng on current settings but can live witb if. Very happy with Meister R's so far.

ABP originally set front and rears to approx 25mm drop with mid dampers (think they have 32 clicks, so 16 clicks from hard). They usually set to fully soft initially but as I am a good 80 plus miles away I asked them to set it halfway to get me home as there is damage to the nearside wheel arch after a pothole. Anyway, after leaving it was obvious the rear wheel was scrubbing and even on fully hard it was unacceptable. So ABP kindly raised it to the max height on the rear and damping set to approx 11 from hard which stopped the scrubbing and got me home without decimating the tyre! Anyway, currently the front is approx 25 mm drop with a damper at 16 from hard and rear at full height with damper at 11 from hard. Once I get the wheel arches rolled I will lower the rear and raise the front slightly as it occasionally hits the arch.

Mine do though, especially on the roads in Yorkshire (B roads). I'lm hace to get the wheelarcv at the rear fixed or rolled. The front also scrubbs flat out and those are ok,so will need to raise the height slightly at the front

Rears are shimmed. Running 225/40 R18 with 10mm spacers all round and team dynamics 1.2 pro race with et45

Personally I found them better than the Eibachs when they are on a softer setting (16 clicks from hard F/R) but as I am primarily after handling I changed this to 10 clicks from hard all round, which I don't think is any worse than the Eibachs in terms of ride quality but better handling wise. Still playing with them but with so much adjustment I would say you could easily find a setting to give a better ride quality than the Eibachs.
