The fn2 was in for service yesterday, got a call from Honda dealer , they cannot check rear o/s tyre pressure due to them being unable to remove metal dust cap .... I took the car home and neither can I remove it ...

sounds like it's overtightened or corrosion has set in. If you can't use any grips to get it off, unfortunately you have to go and have a new valve.

As expected for Honda, I'd go to a local independent who should be cheaper,

Be carefully if you try and use grips yourself and you may damage the valve and then you'll have a flat too :-/
You could try using some releasing fluid on it first, WD40 etc to see if it loosens it up.

is it plastic or metal dust cap ?

i had a metal one seize on mine not long ago and ended up using a needle file to cut a groove/slice down the length of the dust cap to get it off which worked

if its plastic a stanley knife should do the same job or heat the stanley blade up to slice through it

i had this happen to me, from my experience just take it to a local Tyre place and get the valve replaced, i used two sets of grips on mine, they had welded themselves to the valves the next thing i know i have a flat tyre

:grin2: er nope, I have a carbon fibre road bike and the seat post is made of Alloy, occasionally the two weld together and the tried and tested way to separate them is to use boiling water. May work getting the dust cap off, and yes, a Brew while you're doing this would be a bonus especially with todays temperatures. :laugh2:

I was only joking (almost).

In line with a needle file suggestion, I'd also be thinking about a Dremmel and try and cut it off carefully. Cut into it just enough to pry it off.

The first thing that struck me though was, when was the last time the tyre pressures were checked. Given the recent drop in temps I reckon tyres have lost 2 or 3 psi anyway and need checking.

i used a needle file i thought a dremmel might have been a bit too viscous
it just takes a bit longer :)

the one i got stuck was the so called stainless caps that iv'e been using for years, it's the first time ones ever seized

I'm a bit late on this, but I have metal dust caps fitted which have been on for over 2 years. I put a dab of Vaseline on valve threads before fitting, but the important thing is to undo them regularly. I undo each dust cap by one turn and retighten every time I wash the car, it's usually only undisturbed bits which seize on.
I too have several good bikes, and you learn the hard way what happens if you ignore potential problems.

I rather suspect they want so much because it's not as simple as simply pulling out the old valve and putting in a new. If I remember correctly, the valve base sits inside the tyre so to install a new valve it's wheel off, tyre off the rim, old valve out, new valve in, tyre back on rim, possibly re balancing as the tyre maybe sit differently, then wheel back on the car.

From the amount of the charge it sounds as if they're charging you approx 1/4 hr labour plus the valve and cap.

As the above post notes. It's not as simple as just changing the valve. You have to remove tyre from rim to replace valve so a balance would be required too so if you can get it done and balanced for less than £10, I'd be interested to know where. I remember a few year back when I had an Imprezza, I popped into a Kwik Fit after buying a set of new alloys and they wanted £10 per corner just to change the alloys over?

within a mile of my home there is at least 4 indi tyre fitters
any one of them will change the valve for a tenner

Pronto Tyres Bolton
tyres r us Bolton
platinum Tyres Bolton and directly across the road is another tyre place that seems to have no name but has been there for years

in bolton there must be 20 - 30 indi tyre places there all over the place this is just 4 i know of within a mile of me i bet there's more if i did a little searching

Naw a decent tyre fitter can just break the bead, pull the valve through and push the tyre down and pop another one in so no balance needed bud. I have a guy local to me that wouldn't take anything for changing a valve(leaking) just a couple of months ago, but still gave him a tenner. When I had my Accord Kiwk Fit actually removed tyres from a set of alloys I bought for nothing, they did charge me for a new valve, refitting and a balance though, as expected.
