Diesel FRV problems

My brother's diesel FR-V is making some interesting noises, which to me sound like a bottom end death rattle (i really hope it isn't)

I don't have my stethoscope handy at the moment, but can anyone tell me if these engines have problems with chain tensioners or water pumps? and how difficult are these to get to and replace?

I'm really hoping it's not a bottom end failure.

Oh it's an '06 car if that helps?

Cheers
Dan

I assume this is a 2.2 iCDTi engine ?
[There is no variable cam timing on the diesel]

There have been 1 or 2 timing chain issues.
But to get to it involves removing injectors that rarely come out without breaking.
Dont rule out a knackered DPF also.

Yes it is an I-cdti motor

Is the tensioner an oil pressure fed one? I checked the oil on sunday and it was just off the stick so could low oil pressure have damaged it? (the idiot light hasn't come on 'apparently').

how difficult is it to pull the engine on one of these? i'm used to the engine being at the other end.

I've just been looking at the link, if this engine is dead then I think the car will go up for sale/breaking, the gasket set alone is worth more than the car!

No one yet.... how too with pics would be good
There is 100s with noise coming from tensioners and pulleys.
Dont think anyone has considered the alternator bearings yet.
Changing the tensioner did bugger all.
