Civic EX 1998 Gearbox

Our 1998 Honda Civic EX with 50,000 miles has recently exhibited unacceptable behavior. The key can turn on the ignition but the gear shift can not be moved from Park to Reverse or Drive. It is locked. A manual override will free the gear shift so one can move from Neutral to Drive. But it can then lock up, the key can not be removed from the ignition. The local Honda Dealer can not figure out what is happening. They had the car for a week and this did not happen. It is home, okay for a few days, then "locks" again. What is going on?

Thanks! Julia
