Heating Problem

Hi all
Can somebody help
When drive car from cold the temp gauge goes up slowly but as i put fans on the temp gauge goes down and no hot air comes out.
If I turn fan off gauge goes back up
Could this be a new thermostat?

Sounds like it to me, I take it this happens also when the engine is running at full operating temperature, i.e. after a 20 min drive?
