Help! Am I being ripped off??

First post so hello to everyone!

I have a civic type-r ep3 55 plate and my partner took my car to Honda Dealer to get the front brake pads replaced as I was advised by the garage who done my MOT about a month ago...

I get a phone call from Honda saying that my near side front caliper has seized and needs a new one... I say well you need to put it back together again because my partner needs to get to work etc and he tells me that they can replace the pads but it will need to come in ASAP to get the caliper replaced or it will wear heavily on the new pad or damage the disc. A new caliper is 487 fitted... I moan a bit and ask if there is anything he can do as I've already paid 105 for the pads and its due for a service soon etc... He comes back with 417.60 fitted...

I don't understand how they were able to replace the pads if the caliper is seized? How would they get the new pad in I'd the caliper is seized?

I asked why the caliper is so much and its because its a genuine honda part and apparently it's also cause mine is a limited edition with the Type-R embossed on the caliper (calipers are red also but apparently they don't come sprayed so its gonna cost me even more money to get it sprayed from somewhere else after)

What do you guys think?

Any advice appreciated

You can rebuild the caliper and they should know that? The kits are on ebay and arent expensive

Hi mate,

Although i despise having ANY work done by main dealers, because they're all incompetant mechanics. I do seriosuly doubt that they would make up something to earn more money.

I'd get the car away from them and get another garage to sort it.

Get some second hand calipers from ebay or rebuild your currents!

Garage
It all depends on how long the calipers been siezed, if its recent it can probably be rebuilt as costel said, but if its been siezed for ages ( seals totally rusted through) it will be impossible to rebuild ( had this on a saab, turned out it had been siezed for months) would certainly look elsewhere or go for ones without the type r on the side, will be loads cheaper.

FN2 and EP3 front calipers are the same, could you not find a set of FN2 calipers?

Usually go for about 150ish for a set

Mmmmm not sure if serious, a garage did the MOT advised the brakes need doing so you go to the stealers? why not get the garage to do them would of been much cheaper. Anyhoo a link to a set of FN2 calipers being sold now on this site http://www.civinfo.com/forum/items-s...-calipers.html

Yes EVO brakes but will need fabrication to fit IIRC... I was looking at some a while ago...

You can bolt on DC5 Brembo's though you just need S2000 disk's then!

Appreciate all the replies guys its been a big help... I've booked it in to a garage this afternoon which are going to have a look and see if the caliper is repairable or not then ill go from there.
I appreciate the advice to not get Honda parts etc but I'm just thinking if I don't then I'm gonna have odd Calipers on the car - 3 with type-r on them and an odd one without which I think will look a bit stupid lol

Are fn2 Calipers really identically to the ep3's ??

I've read the Fn2 front set up is identical to the Ep3 its just the rears that are different, and if it is true (and im sure it is) Fn2 owners could save quite a bit of money buying front brakes meant for the Ep3, the big kits for the Ep3 are loads cheaper

Discs and pads buddy. Op you dont have type r on the rear calipers and as i say a caliper rebuild is your cheapest option. You could get a refurbed caliper off ebay on an exchange basis. Do some research

If you did this you may also need spacers apparently?!

Spacers aren't very expensive so that wouldn't be a problem from around 5 upwards depending on sizes.

Well I don't know what to bloody do...

I took it to another garage and they can't help as the piston is seized so it definitely needs a new caliper... But no one can get a genuine part from anywhere... Honda say they can't get one so its on back order... Expected the end of next week or maybe the week after.

Not good as I really need my car to get to work etc... The misses has been giving me lifts when she can or letting me borrow her car but its not ideal so I'm at a proper loose end now
