Spiders

I'm new to forums so forgive me for this question ; What's a spider ? It appears next to how many users are logged on ect.

A techie question here - how does the forum software know it's a spider, does 'it' have to identify itself.

Most carry an ident. If not, then the software picks them out by their ip address. All are looked up in a directory that I maintain:
