Re-mapping question

Hi,
Is it possible to tell if a car has been re-mapped and then put back to it's original map? Sorry I know very little about the subject but it's something I'd like to know if I was buying a 2nd hand car.

Just a quick question...... And I don't mean anything by it.

If it had been mapped and then restored back to its original map, why would you be interested?
If it's standard then it's standard?!

I imagine it's for peace of mind knowing it's not been ragged the crap out of.

Having said that, most people who are savvy enough to properly remap a car will usually look after it.

As anthropolyte said, it's just for peace of mind, and secondly I also work with flash memory based microcontroller parts so I'm curious from that point of view as well.

You wouldn't be able to tell if its been previously remapped.
Best thing to do though would be to look for tell-tale signs of previous mods like missing or different coloured bolts around things like intakes and exhausts etc.

Often see people coming in with what they think is a totally standard car from a dealers or supposedly one owner only to find a few bits changed and moved that you would normally do when you fit a supercharger.

On the plus side at least you know the motor is nice and loose.

Tbf any car could be thrashed, doesn't necessarily had to have been remapped.

Exactly. You cannot trust what the salesman says. Any second hand car will have an unknown history and is therefore a risk. But on a positive note you can also get a great car for a fraction of the new price. Honda engines can take a thrashing anyhow. Honda state in their brochures that they test the engines at max RPM for days.

I got my 3rd CTR (two EP3's and one FN2).
First one was very powerfull, but it was accident repair from dishonest dealer and i didn't know about this untill my brother in law ( bodyshop specialist) has seen car... then i had an accident and sell it to other bloke who... crashed it as well. It was more abused than pimp's girlfriends.
Second one was in immaculate condition outside but it was shockingly slow... in fact my old Fiesta ST150 was faster than that CTR. I even go to honda dealer to connect to the diagnostics to see where the problem was - no problems find during diagnositics - it must be ragged previously.

Third one is my FN2 - powerfull and in relativelly good outside condition, but i had to learn on two previous ones to make a good choice and even there i was stitched up by previous owner as he warm up the car before my test drive so gearbox was working smooth and i wasn't able to spot 3rd gear synchro issues...

To find a decent CTR in great condition is more difficult than find a virgin at university these days

Files normally have dates associated with them so it could be a give away if you could some how look at the file write date using a computer. Obviously a file that has been written at a later date than the car manufacturing date would suggest some kind of change to it. I've never tried to do this but in theory you could.
