Light scratches Nighthawk black

Is it just me or is the nighthawk black the worst colour for swirls, light scratches. My car is covered. What would people recommend for a good polish?

Anything in particular you would use?

I have swirls all over and scratches probably from wear and tear and cleaning over the years through car washes, accidental, jet wash brushes etc.

If doing it by hand then i'd recommend Gtechniq P1 using the white/yellow side of a tri-foam applicator.

If you are using a Dual Action polisher (DAS6) i'd recommend Meguiars #205 on a Lake COuntry Hydrotech orange pad

There are many products yes, but no they don't all do the same job. Choose the wrong one & you will damage the car.

I found that Meguirs compound polish is good on black civics, it got some of my minor swirls out of the paint

I did 2 stage paint correction on mine recently using a DA polisher and starting with megs M105 with an orange hex logic pad, and then finished down with megs M205 with a white pad (obviously clayed 1st as well as treating the whole car with Korrosol too!)

Black will always show even minor damage VERY quickly, and the Honda paint is very soft too, which corrects pretty easily, but also marks easily too!

I wouldn't personally want to go swirl and scratch chasing by hand - it takes long enough to do it properly with a DA!

Out of interest, how do you wash/dry your car!? Most of the damage done to paint is done by improper wash techniques (not saying your doing this btw, just making a statement!), but also something as silly as poor quality microfibre towels can balls things up very quickly!

Megs 105 is far too aggressive a polish for Honda paint, yes you will get your defects removed but at the cost of removing plenty more clear coat than you need to.

Depends how long you want so spend getting swirls and scratches out and how bad they are to begin with, how good-a finish you're aiming for!

M205 is really more of a finishing/spit shine polish as it has very little cut, could you get out the damage with it, yes, but you'd take a hell of a lot longer than using the two in combination! Obviously there's only so much clear coat/paint on the car so you can't keep doing it time after time, but using the two as a combo one after the other is nothing to be afraid of imo if you have experience and confidence in what your doing!

I took 4 days polishing my car doing it this way!, had I tried to do it with M205 (& get the same results), I'd probably still be going!

The whole idea is I only have to get this aggressive ONCE, and then I'll never have to do it again!

I have only had the car about a month, I have just took it to a jet wash so far but I want to give it a proper clean using the correct stuff and technique. This weather makes it harder to justify going all out at the moment though so in thinking if I just do some normal washes and then when the weather starts picking up polish it up.

We're about the same then as I've only had mine 1month as of today! Agreed the weather makes cleaning and maintaining cars difficult!, when you say "normal washes" though, what do you mean??

Don't want to sound condescending or owt like that, but even now washing "properly" will save you work down the line when you decide to go swirl hunting! It will also give you a MUCH greater chance of being able to maintain the finish you do get once you break the polish out! One bad wash using poor techniques can set you back massively, which is why I don't go to the local "scratch n swirls" (hand car washes you see dotted about!), and I always insist on "do not wash" when it goes in for a service etc!

Hell when I went on my hols a couple of years ago I basically didn't wash the car for two whole weeks (even though I clocked up over 2k miles) simply because I knew I couldn't wash the car properly!

Totally agree #105 is way, way too harsh, having the maximum compound cut. Honda paint is soft/thin. #205 has a good amount of cut. But hey ho, it's only my opinion, go less aggressive is always the best option. I'd be interested to know paint readings after using #105 on a Civic.

From my experience of civics I've machined, paint readings are pretty low and especially thin above the doors hence why 105 is a no no. Every possible chance of a strike through in these thin areas with incorrect technique, too much pressure, too fast a speed and wrong pad Polish combo. But hey how each to their own

Well I've done it twice now on both the FN2's ive had and never had an issue so I'm not worried!

I guess you guys must be choosing to ignore/disregard some stuff if your only using M205 or similar and only doing fairly minor correction!?

I'd agree that getting aggressive isn't something a complete amatuer should attempt.

Suppose it depends how bad your car is and how good you want it!

Not doubting it worked, it will have, no question. What were the paint readings after?

Think there's some misunderstanding here!, I'm not nor have I ever claimed to be a detailer, hence I don't own a paint depth gauge! My cousin is, but that's irrelevant as this is my own personal car and as such I was willing to take the risk, and if I had struck through anywhere I'd have booked the car in and had it painted.

My only aim here was to clean up the paintwork enough to a point where I would be happy with it on a personal level! Is the car mint, hell no but it's "good enough" for now!

Can you get some swirls and scratches out with less aggressive polishes, yup no argument there! I am simply stating what I did personally as two stage paint correction (where necessary) will fix paint a LOT faster than a mild approach with say just M205, all depends what your aiming for, the time you have or are willing to put in, & in my case I this occasion atleast the risk your willing to take!

This is all getting waay off topic though isn't it!
