Unhappy Loud knocks from transmission - CV joints or gearbox?

So after testing launch control with group N map and having some wheel spins and bumping i got now those loud bangs from transmition... Looks to me like CV joints, but could this be gearbox?

- it's happening when you start rolling and change gears after depressing cluch (after it bites).
- When you drive smooth there is no problem, but soon as you release throttle it bangs and jitter the car.
- Its worst on corners.

Noise is metalic bangs one after other or one at a time - when it happens and you press clutch it goes..
Looks like its happening under load only.
CV joints?
Anyone knows how much they are?

So mechanics saying my diff has gone...
Got two options now:
- refurbish my gerabox (awaiting worst case scenario quotation from express gearboxes).
- buy second hand gearbox - this will cost between 400-700 for the gearbox and 320 fitment.

What do you think?

P.S - don't use launch control

Sorry to hear of your troubles...sounds nasty. If it was me I'd get the gearbox refurbished with a new diff. If you haven't got a limited slip diff already, it could be a good excuse to get one fitted. An MFactory diff will cost £550 or so plus the fitting - similar price to the second hand gearbox you mentioned. Good luck anyway.

when my diff exploded the car still drove normally but i could hear a loud whine from the box, probably due to the crack in the bottom of the box with oil leaking out of it. i got my own gearbox out and a new one to chuck in, along with a lsd, rpc flywheel and stage 1 clutch. its the best time to upgrade seeing as how everything is coming out anyway.

By new you mean second hand or factory new?
How much did you pay for this lot if you don't mind me asking?

new to me a factory new obox is something like 6k i believe and a quaife sequential is only 5.5k, it was a second hand box from ebay. it was listed at 550 and as having been from a 09 car with 50k on it but i cant prove that to be correct, i messaged him and offered 450 +postage and he accepted. the exedy stage 1 clutch was £240, rpc flywheel £200, lsd i think was around 600 + the cost of bearings. i used a genuine honda clutch release bearing £35 as i have heard the exedy ones can fail or grumble after a while, and labour was £200.

all parts i bought from tegiwa and the prices i have listed are only what i remember so could be more or less. it is expensive but worth getting it all done at one time as you save on the labour.

One more question - looking for a gearbox on ebay, send seller a question about 2007 gearbox if they know how was the syncro on this gearbox and they answer:

"the earlier gearboxes had either 2nd gear or 3rd gear sync problems, RZF is the later box with improved cones"

Is this true?

i dont know about box codes but assume the code will be the same across all year fn2's but it was 07 and early 08 that suffered 3rd syncro problems, if what he says is true about the codes then the seller is either lying about it being 07 as it would have the earlier code, or he is lying about the codes and it is a 07 box.

Decided to go for second hand gearbox, honda clutch kit and honda gearbox oil, so completelly stock - not planning to spend any more money on this car since it seems to be made out of clay... Will keep it as it is (milltek, HKS and Flashpro) for year or two and then get back to Ford I'm having no luck with Honda's (two EP3's and now FN2 - something wrong with each)

Gears in main gearbox were actually quite good. Just the diff explode. One of the tooths is inbedded in casing as seen on one of the photos...

Car had 94k miles, 2k miles after gearbox oil change (Red Line MTL).
I have try launch control TWICE...

when you say launch control do you mean revving it to the stationary limiter and dumping the clutch? because thats not launch control.

My launching wasn't that hard either, yes - i got some wheel spin and bouncing and that contributes massively, but again - it wasn't as hard as i was driving my little rally seicento with stock gearbox... Strange. Plus yours blew up during normal driving. I have to admit - i lost my trust to the car, it will take some time to biuld this up again, at the moment i'm in the "period of listening to any suspicious noise" rather than enjoing driving :-/

i lost trust when my gearbox went, but a few weeks layer the sump plug fell out even though it was torqued to spec on the last oil change and that killed the car for me for a while. i was so close to selling and getting a evo but the running costs compared to a fn2 were massive, performance for price you really cant get any better than a type r. i eventually regained trust in it but still have moments when i hear something and think "**** whats broken now".

Oh sh**! did you managed to stop on time? do you really mean "killed"? Sounds like a nasty surprise. My last car was a 2002 ST170, and i was ragging it as hell for 4 years and nothing happened, that's why my didssapointment is so big. Agree with price to performance ratio, maybe ST225 can be an option, but it's uglier, and newest focus st is still too expensive.

yeah i stopped in time luckily, there was a huge oil spill under the car when i had stopped and ive never used the anchors so hard in my life hahaa. when i say killed i mean i hated the thing, it still worked fine but it just seemed problem after problem and i was loosing patience with it. if the engine is damaged and eventually fails chances are i will take it off the road get a cheap run about and build it as a k24 race car. even after all the problems i have had i still cant bring myself to trade it in, just puts a smile on my face on a nice twisty road. and where i live there are plenty of good roads.
