MikeF's 1.6 i-DTEC

8000 kilometers done now and time to tell my experiences.

(And sorry, I am not mainly using imperial units. Models are maybe different to British models too.)

Bought it mainly because of a great engine. Japanese brand names haven't got any good diesels, this should be. More comfortable than models before. I believe stories, although I don't have no experiences (Civic) before that. I have not been any Honda Fan before. Have not hated it too, it has been like non-existent to me. Pricing is more affordable than it was earlier.

Fuel efficiency is good, excellent in cities. It's fantastic how low it can be (city). Road consumption is poorer compared to city. I have to admit we don't have any "Real Cities" this area. No London, not even Manchester (You've got it, right?).

Fuel now 4,3 litres per 100 kms (66 mpg). Tank to tank, meter lies 0,5 litres. For my disappointment it's going up now on winter time. I believed it will go down because of lower speeds.

Reasons for this? Tyres Michelin (summer) Continental (winter)? More using of head lights instead of LEDs? These should not do it, but I don't have other ideas. Weather has not been cold at all (for our weather.)

This is the first car for me taking more fuel than EU average. Companies seem to have more reasons to optimize for test, real life is then different.

I am positive on the car. Have to stress this because I will tell several things I don't like. Car is smooth for driving in general including sounds. Some seem to think it noisy, me not. Engine is operating "gas-like". "Pumpe Duse" Passat sound very different compared to this. Still i did not take it bad too, but starting in cold and You really hear this is a diesel.

I was telling (like some other), reflections to wind screen are much too strong. Then I found how to adjust dashboard lightning.

Some buttons are not well thought. I still make mistakes in a/c and heating. Tank opening handle is terrible. Hood and tank levels down, invisible nd so hard to differentiate.

I agree that the hood and tank levers are not in a good location. They should swap it so that the fuel is the bottom lever and the bonnet release is the top lever. At least there is a "Bonnet Open" alert on the iMid in case you inadvertently open the bonnet.

A Visibility Issue

I did know Civic visibility is not anything to write home about. Later I found out that lower rear window gets dirty very easily. Reversing is nothing but easy (to me) after that. And front too. When I think it's crashing very very soon, it's still nearly one meter to go.

I surely knew some models got camera and sensors. Only the price was so much more that i didn't want to pay. My solution was (and maybe still is) to get them afterwards. They're cheap, but are cheap ones working? And higher price tag can mean only higher price tag, not better functionality or quality. I have experiences on Civic camera, absolutely good. But maybe always dirty. Leaning to sensors to both ends, but still reasearch to do. Maybe I am too slow to decide.

The bottom of the rear window getting dirty is a pain.....if it's any consultation the rear camera gets covered with dirt too so isn't a sure fix!

I've never found the camera much use. Just there to impress passengers. I've always used the door mirrors and rear sensors to reverse.

Continuous beep = stop

I found it's useful point is reversing into car park spaces as you can line up well with the lines. ...only do that if not using the boot though. ..

That's true

All I need to do is to learn how to reverse in and park parallel with the lines. This 9G is so difficult without doing a 'Steve McQueen' and reversing with the drivers door open and leaning out !

9g with parking sensors and rear camera is really ease to parallel park in a tight space. Not only can you judge where the front and back are but you can use the camera to judge distance from the kerb as you reverse in.

Bummer is the camera is manky thought.......

Could be just the cold weather. Mine held a steady 64.6 mpg throughout the summer, but now we're into the cold weather it's dropped to 62.4 mpg. My daily journey is the same, speeds haven't dropped much, I haven't increased the A/C, it's still the same set temperature from summer, haven't swapped for winter tyres. The only difference is the weather outside

It has been very cold here, between 10 and 20 minus. But Civic works well. I have block heater (and the plug it needs) both work and home. Warm enough inside. Very little rougher engine noise. Now old Passat Power Diesel sounds very harsh.

Small nice things. Leds around starting key (hope You understand). Four handles inside trunk door (?). Opening makes your hand dirty (my old Cruze had electric lock, much better).

I reported higher fuel consumption, but on the other hand even when driving short distances in so cold conditions, it's still very modest.

10000 kms now.

Steering ok for me. Not too light as some say.

Cruise good. Up or down to next ten when pressing longer time. Do not cancel less than five secs; can change gear having cruise on all the time.

Wiper blades do their work poorer than good. Mentioned somewhere else too.

iMid; much of information, but sometimes still hard to find what You're looking for.

My Start/stop works oddly sometimes too. I was guessing got the same problem described here. But now it works again. Nothing serious.

Hill holder star/stop co-operation fails in difficult situations. After I do something weird. So not really a car's problem at all.

I saw a test where Honda's (CRV, 1.6 DSL) engine had the lowest fuel consumption rise in cold. Supports my own perceptions. Gap to the next one was nothing but small.

Warmer (not so cold) weather, fuels consumption has gone down some.

- flaps behind front wheels contact ground very easy
