Which? First drive

Review: Honda Civic (2012-) - Latest first drives - Choosing a car - Which? Car

Whatís its Achillesí heel?

Interior upgrades have made the hatchback feel more premium inside
Most of the fundamental issues with the 2006- Civic remain for the 2012 model.

The decision to retain the rear spoiler across the back window still limits the rearward view. Honda claims the spoiler has been lowered to improve the view out of the back, but itís still too restricted, especially with the wide C pillars.

Another area of focus highlighted for improvement by owners was the ride quality. Honda has acted on this by upgrading the torsion beam rear suspension to fluid-filled bushes instead of rubber, and also improved the spring and damper rates on the front suspension. Unfortunately, itís difficult to tell how much difference this has made, as you can still feel every blemish and change in the road surface.

And the suspension changes hasnít done much to improve interior noise either. According to Honda, there is sound proofing under the bonnet, in the panels and even on the undersides of the wheel arches, but itís still not eliminated the road noise or the rumble of the agricultural 2.2-litre diesel, which can be heard at a standstill through to high speeds.

On top of this, itís still not particularly involving to drive. Thereís still an element of body roll, despite the changes to the suspension, and attempts to make the steering more responsive by retuning the electronic power steering haven't reduced the vague feeling through the wheel.

Finally, the looks arenít bold enough to make a statement, instead toning down original and slightly futuristic styling of the 2006 model.

Isn't it odd how a group of people driving the same group of cars in the same place can come to such different conclusions.

It seems to be about 2/3 likers and 1/3 dislikers at the mo.

We seem to be getting conflicting reports from all quarters.

It's like the i-shift debate, we are all going to have to make our own minds up.
