the Golf's quality and reliability were both rated as above average in the 2011 JD Power customer satisfaction survey

Above average apparently gets you 4 out of 5. Well done what car.

I've driven 4th gen (had one), 5th gen (mums got one) and 6th gen (old works pool car). The golfs newer than the 4th gen are cheaply built, mums had endless problems with hers as opposed to none with mine when she had it, the 6th gen is tasteless and boring to say the least in my opinion. Havn't experienced a 9gen yet but I strongly believe it will be far more enjoyable to drive. My 8gen diesel is the best car I have ever driven and the only one that has ALWAYS put a smile on my face when I drive it.

Golf's are not good value for money either, spec one up to Civic standards and look at the price in the car configurator.

I configured a 1.4 TSI Golf Match DSG with SatNav and a few other bits that the Civic has as standard and even without leather it topped £26k

Brakes are very harsh on the new golfs too, they do grip the road well but feels abit like a toy, not like a spaceship

everytime i drive my parents golf i nearly end up though the windscreen!

This is my point with everyone bitching about the supposed high price of the 9th gen. It starts at £150 higher than the model it replaces, and yes, at the top end its 2,500 more than before - with a better engine and much higher spec/quality. Spec up a focus or Golf to the sames level, then see what you'd be paying. Its not Hondas fault if Ford then have to slice 3k off in order to sell one.

Ford > None. Fix Or Repair Daily
Although saying that did have a 11 Plate Focus as a hire car, nice nippy little 1.6 Diesel, very economical. Shame when you pushed the brake pedal you never stopped though - was like a moth trying to slow it down with its wings - just ain't happening. Also I hated it told ME when to shift gear. No car, you don't do that. I'm doing 1,500 revs.

so we all agree that the 8th gens brakes are poor then the vags are too good? if my brakes were vag spec i could have saved myself 500 quid

vags are harsh. pedal is too sensitive, brakes are good yes but would be resolved on the golfs if had a similar sensitivity to the older golfs/ civic 8gen (soft then harder you press harder it goes on, as it should be!!! lol) just seems they are either on or off sometimes driving the newer vags...

It's the economic background that contributes to the price.

I had an 06 ST2 with a number of extras, list price £19995. The new Focus Zetec S has just been launched with the 177bhp 1.6 @ £21k!

how can be the 8th and 9th civic can be compared to a can for sardines? (bmw 1)
the German car's interior spaces are equal to a Rover 214 or less.....
I know as a previous Rover owner (11 years) who when time had come for a new car,went to a BMW dealership and found out that it is very uncomfortable for not 5 but 4 passengers....

plus no engine power,and very expensive when compared at the same level of equipment with the civic...
5000 - 7000 euros more....

I hope the 9G CIVIC has a different clutch when I see all the complaints regarding The diesel 2.2 clutch, at the moment mine has no problem @22000 miles hopefully it will remain so

2 stars seems very harsh.

I can 2nd Volkswagen brakes being sharp. I had a loan Tiguan and yep it literally pinned you to the dash with even the slightest touch, soft braking was near impossible. Stopping distances were impressive though, far better than the Civic from the feel of it and thats in a 4x4!

I currently have a 11 plate Jazz loan car and have to say that the brakes on that are much sharper than the Civic, not as sharp as the Tiguan but definitely soft braking is near impossible.

What I do find surprising on the current Civic though, is that a sports car can have softer and seemingly less efficient brakes than a mobility scooter of a car like the Jazz which is underpowered and bought mostly by pensioners!

whats all this talk of crpa brakes on a 8gen- have any of you driven a Ka(k) now there is a car with no funkin brakes

I concur.

VAG brakes have always been either 'off' or 'on'. My old Mk iv Golfs brakes were very harsh. Personally, I much prefer the progressive brakes of the Civic.

I booked an Opel (Vauxhall) Astra for when I travelled to the UK early this year - got the key at the airport, got in, started up and looked around, turned off and when went back to the hire desk ...

Now, this was a car with about 300 miles on the clock ! - I said "the car is a pile of steaming crap, as the engine runs irregularly, and there are already bits falling off in the cabin !" ...

To their credit, they offered profuse apologies, and said "to make things right, we'll give you a free upgrade, to a brand new Insignia" ...

O.K. - so off I went, and sure enough, just 11 miles on the clock and pristine, with lots of 'toys' - but, what a clunker it was to drive ! - diesel engine transplanted from an old tractor, and handling worse than cars I had 20 years or more ago ...

Oh, yes - and brakes that were either sponge or locked !!! ...
