Thumbs up 2007 Civic EX 2.2 diesel manual - 5 year review

Hi,

I thought I would give a quick review of my experiences with the car before I trade it in. I bought it second hand in march 2010 with 22k miles on the clock. It is now at 96,500 miles.

The previous owner had said the MPG wasnt very good (he averaged mid 40s mpg). Unsure if this was because engine was breaking in but I very easily achieved high to mid 50s as soon as i got it and when summer came I even managed to get 84mpg average and achieved 700 miles on a single tank of fuel (admittedly doing 50mph for most of it. Lol). Anyhow I drive it with a heavier foot now (nothing crazy) and it still has averaged 53Mpg. My miles are mostly motorway with very few short journeys. The car has never broken down on me. The only trouble I have had is with the air con blowing a relay.

Good points:
Comfortable seats
Easy and fun to drive
Grips the road well
Reliable
Sat nav in good position (unlike latest civic)
Good fuel economy
More than enough acceleration for most people
Large boot
Good motorway cruiser

Bad points:
Engine noisy in town
Internal plastics very easy to damage
Hard suspension can give rough ride on British roads
Boot needs a hard slam to shut it now
Difficult to judge distance when parking it. There is always more space than you think!

Unlike what I've seen mentioned in the forum I have not had excessive paint chipping. There are very few on mine. I also haven't noticed any creaks or rattles.

Oh and forgot to mention that the speakers in the car are not great. I am no audiophile but I was disappointed with sound quality. Also the radio reception in the car has always been bad.

Pretty much sums it all up !

A great choice for the s/h car owner. (clutch really only cause for possible concern/caution)

Yup, seems a fair summary.

I had to slam my boot until I fitted the rear camera, now it shuts much easier.

It improved after taking out and re fitting the tailgate internal trim.

At the time I also took a look at the lock and latch mechanism, but couldn't see anything wrong.

I wonder if a clip wasn't seated properly?

Doesn't the boot lid have twist-to-adjust rubber stoppers on either side? They might make it easier to close the boot.

Yeah, I haven't looked into the cause of the boot issues but you are probably right that is the trim in the way. It had never particularly bothered me. I just accept it. lol.

My previous car was a 1.4l 1999 Civic 3 door hatchback auto. That had a similar boot issue. I did 140k miles in that car with not a single issue. So Honda is a brand I trust.
