Comparing Type S GT to Type R GT

Hello all,

I have had my Type R for just over a week now so I guess I'll give a quick little review and comparison as I've experience these 2 wonderful cars.

Exterior: well we all know the Type R looks astonishing on the outside and that rear spolier with colour coded trims makes all the difference! Although I think i prefer the Nighthawk Black with the blue glitter inside the paint as to compared with Crystal Black. But, still a very good colour. The fuel cap seems very thin compared to the type s???

Interior: the Type S had a very cheap feel all round, the dash had a really poor plastic feel: the driver side air vent feels like some flimsy plastic flap. The Type R has a very sturdy/solid feel to all the little mechanical parts that seems to have a professional finish to it

Engine: god... the best upgrade ever. it just accelerates so much better than the Type S. On idle it is dead silent: you don't know that the engine is on. But then you press the gas pedal and it wakes up with a powerful roar and slapping a big massive grin on your face You accelerate up to 5000rpm and the engine sounds like its calling for you to change gears but then VTEC kicks in and it keeps on going!

Comfort & Handling: I think the Type R feels probably 3 times harder and 10x more painful than the Type S. You really can feel every bump on the road and driving over a little pot hole can be awfully painful. But when you push it around the corners, the grip is phenominal and hugs the corner so fantastically. Slight understeer which can be a little scary but careful and safe driving always fixes that problem The firmer ride surely makes the Type R better handling than the Type S.

Bits & Bobs: The rear 3rd brake light sure is an improvement compared to the 07 Type S GT. It has more LED's in it now and looks so much better than the diffused look. The HID lights... I don't have much to say about those except I miss that little light adjuster knob that I use to fiddle around with all the time. USB/Ipod connector is somewhat inconvenient for me as I only have 1 Ipod USB cable. But solved that by plugging a memory stick directly into the USB port . The footwell lights - initially very dim, you know the red lights are there but it was mostly blocked by the blue cap holding the light into the socket. But after using Gadgetman's mod it looks so much better and brighter than before and giving that all important little shine on the Type R badge located on the floor mats.

Bad Points: starting to get a rattle in the passenger side area... haven't located exactly where though. and that's about it so far...

Overall, extremely impressed and a huge difference from the Type S. Love the power and the handling, so awesome!

Good write up

Was it the diesel or petrol Type S you had?

I'm very puzzled by your assessment of the dash plastics.
They are the same on both cars!!
There is a slight finish difference on the painted parts on the new models, but its essentially the same
Obviously the engine differences are massive between the 1.8 and 2.0. I guess you had the 1.8 before.

Great review sparda, I too have very recently gone from a type S GT 1.8 to the type R GT and I agree whole heartily with your comments apart from the dash quality. Maybe you had a poor S and a good R?? But with mine they are both exactly the same quality. Regarding the fuel lid .... is it slightly loose? mine was and got it replaced under warranty.

Glad you like the footwell lights mod

sorry. its a 1.8 petrol.

the dash is very different in my opinion from the 09 Type R GT and 07 Type S GT. Not the same at all.

My type S was an 08, don't know if that makes any difference but I was one of the fortunate few that didn't suffer from rattles

It's got to be able to withstand the pressure on it, during wild cornering

The only difference is the panel at the speedo. There isnt any other difference mate.

You will find a big difference from the CTS 1.8 and 2.2. I drove the 1.8 and i was shocked how slow and unresponsive it was. So to compare the 1.8 to a CTR is sorta comparing an apple to an orange hehe

Good luck with your new CTR though

Glad you like it, the CTR is a great car with a peach of an engine

Only the suspension lets it down a bit

i wouldnt expect any other review if someone owes a type r and compares it with type s - some things in type r are waaaay better even if they're exactly the same...

YES! I have found this too and it is really irritating, I now mention it to anyone getting out as otherwise 2 minutes up the road I'm going crazy.
