Mk8 civic ABS/VSA fauly

Hi ABS/VSA light on, My bit of kit told me front right abs sensor open circuit, changed it but no difference, today took wheel off and did tests, no voltage when spinning wheel, Looked into hole where sensor fit but cannot see any teeth at all just a smooth surface, light was on when i got the car thought would be an easy fix, where have the teeth gone is my question.

You may need to clear the codes to get the light to go out even though you've replaced the sensor...

on my 8g light went out as soon as I set off but code was still there till I cleared it

where did you get sensor from

and what code reader did you use

Hi I used a Autel Autolink AL619 and got the sensor off ebay, The ohms seem ok but no voltage at all when spinning wheel, scanner will not erase the code i assume because its a safety issue. Every video i look at on utube shows the teeth clearly but none at all on mine, no damage just a smooth surface.

Hopefully a Civic owner will confirm, but my Accord front sensor encoder was a magnetic ring built into the inner surface of the wheel bearing and it looked absolutely smooth.

Yes but abs/vsa would not light up all the time the "paper clip" was in

Update took car to local garage who put scanner on it, same fault front right sensor, removed codes but straight away the warning came back, fitted a more expensive sensor and still same problem, mot failed because of it

try tracing wiring back see if there's any signs it might be damaged

As far as I’m aware there would be no teeth as it uses a magnetic sensor off the hub bearing.

Not sure how useful that is to you?

it's unlikely 2 sensors are faulty but not unknown, if it's still showing open circuit on the code reader there's a good chance it's something to do with the wiring
once the fault is fixed the abs light goes out without having to clear codes but as already said the code will still be there until cleared

if the magnetic ring on the bearing is duff but the abs sensor is ok the usual thing that happens is the abs light will go out as normal when you turn the ignition on but will come back on as soon as you reach 10mph or so ( basically as you set off )
there are no teeth on the front abs sensors it's a smooth magnetic ring on the surface of the wheel bearing


to re cap
by rights you should be able to change the ABS sensor , turn the ignition on and the ABS light should go out as the fault has been rectified
the abs does a self test / diagnostic every time you switch the ignition on, if there is no fault the light goes out, if there is a fault a fault code is stored and the light stays on,
fix the fault and the next time you switch the ignition on the light will go out but the code will still be stored until cleared with the relevant diagnostic tool

when the abs sensor was changed did you make sure there was no crud / dirt around the face of the bearing before you put everything back together ?
the easiest way i found to get to the bearing face where the magnetic ring is is to loosen the drive shaft nut but not all the way and push the drive shaft through the hub enough to give you a gap to clean the bearing face
it's reasonably important that surface is relatively clean
