Hello

I have a 04 plate 1.7 ctdi civic and have found that if i accelerate hard eg going down the slip road on to a motor way and when i change in to 4th gear it is like the turbo stops working and i cannot rev over 3 thousand revs?? This is happening in all gears until I to pull over and turn the engine off for a few mins then put it back on and its fine. It happens when the engine is cold or warm/hot.

Anyone experienced this before or have an idea of what this could be?

thanks in advance for you help!

are there any warning symbols at all on the dash
i had something simular on my c5 2.2 hdi it turned out to be the partical filter
not sure if yours has it or not
if so a 30 min blast on the motor way should fix it try to keep your revs high as possible if it dos
eg do 70 in 3rd

Hi Mate

There are no warnings on the dash. Not sure if it uses the filter?

Is 70 in 3rd a good idea? That sounds like it would blow my engine.

Thanks for your reply

70 in 3rd should be ok my little 1.4 can mange it
it should be between 3-4k revs on your car i think not sure if its close to red line put it in 4th
if you do alot off small trips the filter can get clogged up

Home now,

ran down the motorway on the way back.

1st and 2nd gear went up to 4k revs fine, 3rd went up to the same then changed in to 4th and the same thing happened. I think it started to loose power near 4k revs in 3rd. That was with the engine cold. I pulled up where i could and i could not rev the engine over 3k revs. I turned the engine off only for a few seconds at first and the problem was still there. It only went away when it was off for 30 seconds???

I started back off and was able to accelerate in 1st and 2nd up to 4k revs which was fine but ran out of 70mph roads to do further tests.

Still no lights on the dash or any funny noises from the engine.

Thanks

Could be turbo pressure overboost thus the ecu disables the turbo and remains in limp home mode, the light may not come on if this happens.

Be very careful....
I had exactly this... and the CAT was blocked on a petrol.
You will destroy the engine if this is the case by flooring it with a blocked exhaust.
2004 HONDA CIVIC 1.7S EXHAUST PIPE (DIESEL) - Honda Original Parts from Lings Honda v1.01 Item 4.
Luckily I blew out the gaskets and the compensator was spring loaded.

There does not appear to be any sensors and there are supports either side... so you should be able to remove ths CAT and test if the power comes.
Remember this is MOT failure like this.. so keep the windows open with good verntilation and only drive a short distance for checking the power.

If its not that I would expect the turbo isnt givng the required boost... but this shoudl be a gradual decline in power not a sudden nosedive at mid revs.

Thanks for that Relic!

I did another test on the way home again from work and i was able to go up to 4k revs in 3rd as long as i wasn't accelerating hard?

Is there a easy was of checking if the cat's blocked rather than take the whole exhaust off?

Thanks

The 1.7 is known for turbo problems - the variable vane diffuser gets blocked with carbon deposits and this can cause the turbo to under-perform or throw the engine into limp mode - I would recommend getting a diagnostic check done ;)

I just got off the phone to Honda and apparently the turbo's have an extended warranty of 7 years or less than 90k. He checked on his system and he confirmed that i haven't had a modified turbo which i am guessing is their replacement one. He also said that it could be the valves? but they are not covered by the warranty. The costs involved are £35+VAT to diagnose the problem which could take up to 1.30hrs to diagnose. If its the valves then they are £200 per valve plus work costs! He then checked on the computer again and said "sorry mate your car is out of warranty" :-( Gutted! Looks like i am going to have to save my pennies!!!

I am going to get it hooked up to a machine that can diagnose it so i hope they can see what the problem is.

I will keep this post updated as and when i get more info. There seems to be a lot of people with similar issues but no proper answers.

Thanks :)

I had the same problem with my A6 diesel. The vnt mechanism was sticking due to being coked up. Basically, the car expects a certain amount of boost from the turbo, and when it doesn't get it, it temporarily puts the engine into limp mode. I used a pair of pliers to shift the control rod for the mechanism and that helped, but the problem only really went away when i had a new turbo fitted (the old one blew up lol)

latest update:

I have taken my car to a garage and they hooked it up to their diagnostic system and it came back with a error about the speed sensor. The guy said it could be that but probably not. I also took it to my step dad who is a fitter for a taxi firm and he put it on his and it never brought back any codes at all. I made the car go in to limp mode and still no error codes. He is pretty sure that its not the turbo as the pipe that leads to the turbo flexes plus the problem doesnt happen in 1st and 2nd gear? Unfortunatly there arent many civic taxi's around so he doesnt know much about the problems they have. I will mention the above problems and fingers crossed we figure out what the problem is.

Thanks all for your suggestions so far!

I have the same problem now, its almost identical apart from i cant really remember when I loose the power though for sure it has happened when i revved up to 4th gear.
car can go into limp mode mid acceleration and will stay that way unless we switch the car off and wait a minute or two.

I took it to my local garage and he told me that the problem is with the solenoid valve, said that the only place he can find it is from Honda and its going to cost over £120 just for the part, let alone labour.

Just bought this 2 months ago and im trying to outsource the part any way I can to cut costs but its proving hard to find. mechanic said he doesn't find many civic diesels in the scrapyard. Any help would be appreciated, or if you think the mechanic has got it wrong then please let me know.

Not a smart idea to rev the knackers off any car when cold FULLSTOP lol.
Let alone a diesel haha

Hope you fix it though.
