Hi guys, I've googled the symptoms quickly and it seems that this is a known issue? :(

If I have my air coming in from outside, I get a very distinct exhaust smell (overwhelming I'd say) and the engine makes a loud ticking noise - goes up with the revs... opening the bonnet, ticking seems to be coming from the left hand side of the engine bay as you look from the front. To me it sounds like a belt or tensioner making a noise, but could be the manifold?

Being a 2006 model, I assume I've missed the warranty (typical!).

Is this a very expensive fix?

The car also gets fogged up REALLY easily in this weather - so I have to keep aircon on constant - is this normal?

Thanks a lot in advance.

BTW - MPG doesn't seem any worse. It has always been around 40-42mpg (bit of a heavy foot), the smell is on whenever I put it non-recirc, it doesn't matter if I've just started the car, been in traffic or cruising a long the motorway - it's constant.

I think you may have a leaking injector... take the engine top cover off (only 4 nuts) and see if there is an oily stain at any of the injectors where they enter the head.

Manifold usually only leaks badly when cold.

Thanks. Is it an easy fix?
Not always! You may be able to simply tighten the injector clamp, but it would be best to remove the injector and clean it up properly first. Sometimes they can be tough to get out, as they can stick in, but if it's blowing then it may already be loose? There are mobile specialist injector removal companies who you could call upon if necessary. Will still be cheaper to repair than a cracked exhaust manifold and very easy to confirm the problem.

Probably best to rule out a cracked exhaust manifold by getting an assistant to start the engine (when cold) while you look at the area between the rear of the engine and the bulkhead... emerging exhaust fumes will be obvious if the manifold is cracked.

Both the above problems are common (the cracked manifold is very common!). Unfortunately you will have missed out on the 7 year / 125k mile extended warranty.
