Hi all,

I have a question on a concerning noise from my engine. on my 2010 FN2
Firstly i apologise in advance if this is posted somewhere else, i have been looking.

So the sound is as the title suggests, sounds a bit like a diesel engine, or some gremlin with a tiny hammer tapping my block. But for me it is only noticeable when accelerating in gear (or maintaining speed by feathering the pedal) not on idle or revving out of gear, which is obviously helping things....
now for me this is odd, because if your driving along with this tapping going on then release the accelerator (still in gear) the tapping goes, so for me at least this takes out the possibility of some loose trim, or a heat shield for example, or severe engine damage or you would surly hear this constantly?
I have a video, only sound - well a video of my air vent. ill be honest its not easy to hear.
i cant post links so copy and paste for youtube video: youtu.be/nq7VYofFSUk

So im just looking for any suggestions on possible faults? or good starting places to look into.
in looking through these posts i did find out that the PCV valve needs replacing, parts on order. but this was more of a 'bearing grinding' noise and constant.
Its booked into a garage tomorrow as my closest Honda dealers are weeks for even being able to look at it......
Im going to ask the garage to check the valve clearances as was last done at 44k and now im at 64k, so definatly worth it as nearly due to the book. but could that cause the sound?
im a bit confused and really worried about driving it.

Any help/advice much appreciated

ps. its bog standard

Thanks for the reply, gives me something to have the garage tackle first tomorrow. Anything serious to worry about with driving it, obviously staying well out of the vtec. Strange all of a sudden and then being SO noticeable!

Ok. So long story short. I'm having a go at it myself.
With the valve cover off obviously you can see the timing chain. How much (if any) slack is supposed to be on the chain?
Exhaust cam gear it's tight almost no movement. But inlet side is got some play in it.

not the result i wanted

So you can ignore the previous post (i think) when turning the engine the chain had no slack.
Right so ive changed the PCV valve (i dont think was related) and now done the valve clearance myself as was going to be end of the month before honda could look at it. Not gonna lie took ages, but i was being meticulous and took my time to be sure i did it right. 0.009 on the intake and 0.011 on the exhaust. But checked them all before i did anything, shocking! i got between 0.015 - 0.030 all round most nearer the higher end!.......slightly off
So now the result........... no difference! not a bit. i wasnt convinced it was the clearances anyway. this is a much louder tap/knock i did another video, i just need to edit and then ill add. but it does seem to run a bit rough on idle now. once it sits for a few seconds it almost feels like its on the verge of cutting out :serious: i am not liking how this is going.
So anybody got some suggestions? even better anybody near by who might be able to help diagnose or suggest a decent garage or mechanic who might know more......
please :crying:

unfortunately the car in the youtube clip does sound like a big end
but I have heard some cars sound similar and it was the camshaft pulleys some have a little movement in them sort of spring loaded

I think there are a couple of bearings in he alternator, might be easy to check and cross off the list.

Hi All,
Sorry haven't updated. As always these things always come at a time when you really don't need them.
Anyway, update. So mate never turned up. tried a few things as advised by others and no real confirmation on the issue. So i sent to Honda dealer to carry out the valve clearance (to be sure it was correct) and had them investigate the noise im hearing and sadly they confirmed that the noise is defiantly coming from the bottom end, not the top and confirmed my fears of the likely hood of the bottom bearings starting to fail.
So im now looking into the cost of the repair, lets say its not looking cheap.
If anyone else has had this and can give some experience, how they solved it. ie just change the bearings or full engine rebuild?
Also if anyone knows of a decent garage who could do the work would be much appreciated.
Honda did 'name drop' a garage called 'Dream Automotive' not to far from me who might be able to do the work, but at this moment still awaiting a reply.
Im now stuck in this situation where i don't really want to loose the car, wont make any decent money back in the state it is in and its bloody expensive to repair........basically screwed! £££££££££££££££££

Have you thought of a K24 bottom end? Were you planning to mod it? That's crap news though.

Sorry to hear that. If it were me I'd take it to a trusted specialist as the noise could be a number of things, don't forget there is a big lump of an oil pump in the same area that 'could' be the issue.

Shame, sounds like bad news all round.
You haven't said how many miles it's done or what the service history is like though.

So, bit of an update. been on holiday so not much done. But i finally got a response from 'dream automotive'. they are in the process of moving there business from Bushey, Watford to there new premises in Luton, about 15 mins away. highly rated, booked in for Monday so im expecting to finally get this moving. im just hoping for good news on the price! could do with it with the amount of things gone wrong this month.....if it could go wrong it has. i fed up and the joys of public transport and bumming lifts off people is really wearing thin now.
Wilmo, car is currently on 64k and has full service history and tons of receipts.
I have read about quite a common cause of oil starvation on these is from hard cornering ie track days as an example. as the sump on these allows the oil to move away from the pump temporarily. so was looking at maybe a baffled sump. think its worth the investment? I dont do track days, just days :grin2:
And whats this K24 Mod? wasnt really looking to mod as i like standard, and these seem generally very pricey for any mods....worth while ones anyway.
Will update when i hear the news from monday........

Hi all,

So just to conclude this post.
My civic is now back on the road! I'm so happy!
The boys at Dream automotive done a cracking job! And she really wants to GO now! Like a different car....But then again I have been enjoying buses for about 2 months so could just be me.
So it defiantly was the bottom end 'rod knock'. Specifically on cylinders 1 & 2. Apparently they were bad, but not too bad that they caused the cylinder to scored the bore or ruined the crank shaft. But trust me when I mean I was pooping it driving it there, sounded so bad! Worse than the videos from before! And I hated driving it then.

So bearing shells changed (connecting rods), timing chain done too (stretched & slipped a tooth, saved on labour) another oil and filter change and valve clearances done again. £1.6k all in, and they washed it.....But I think that was because it was putting there new digs to shame ?

Likely causes, either low oil or too much hard cornering......might be guilty of the second.
But one thing i noticed, now I didn't get that split second rattle, you know when you first start it. Well at least I've heard it's common, or is there something in that?

Hope this post might help people in the future.

Cheers all

Shippo

That's good news that it's back in the road. Mine 07 ctr doesnt make any rattle noise when starting. That's normally symptom of a stretched chain, so maybe that's why you dont hear it now as it's new.
